Generally it's going to be really complicated to do so even if one could find a wiring diagram showing the pinout on the internal connector. Likely not worth the effort and expense versus buying a new LCD. Pretty much you're at selling it for parts to someone else who wants to replace their screen in the same model.noiseredux wrote:similar question: I have a dead laptop with a really nice screen. Anyway I could turn that into a monitor?

If you can get into it, try reseating the cable for the screen.

Hobie is right. I have a dead monitor from an old p4 laptop that was really really nice but it is going to cost about $200 to build an adapter for it (when I first got it it was more like $400). For $200 I can buy a just as good flat screen that is bigger.

Re: Laptop busted
I have an older laptop where the screen has different color lines running vertically across the screen and it was just running pretty crappy so my wife & I purchased another laptop. I was thinking of using this older laptop strictly for running MAME ROMs though but I was wondering if I can replace this screen or at least hook up a new monitor if it can't be replaced?
I am addicted to video games, especially retro gaming from my era. I have: NES, SNES, Nintendo 64, Gamecube, Gameboy, GBA, Wii, Sega Genesis, Sega CD, Dreamcast, PS1, PS2, Xbox, and Xbox 360. I have probably over 1,000 games in total for all these systems combined. Yes, I need help and I wouldn't have it any other way! This is my passion and hey my wife still loves me!!

If you can find the same screen or the same laptop that has died for some other reason then you could swap it. But otherwise yes you could hook a monitor and use it that way.Evildeadmanwalking77 wrote:though but I was wondering if I can replace this screen or at least hook up a new monitor if it can't be replaced?

That is outrageous. It isn't a hard job to replace the LCD. If you are the slightest bit technically inclined, order one from ebay (under $100 if you look around) and replace it yourself. It takes all of 30 minutes or so. Look for a guide online about opening up your specific model laptop.AmishSamurai wrote:There's no crack- the screen lights up, but remains blank. Only place nearby that could replace it wanted $600 to do so- about as much as I paid for the computer. Hence why I'm repurposing it.Breetai wrote:If your screen is broken (cracked), no warranty will probably help you. If it is pixels, they might depending on what your warranty covers.
Does your laptop have video out? If so, you should be able to hook it up to a monitor in addition to a USB mouse/keyboard. It would then be possible to make a MAME machine out of it, depending how how good it is.
It's often cheaper to buy a new laptop than to replace the screen, unless your laptop is really expensive.
It has VGA-out and HDMI-out. It can also run pretty modern games with no slowdown, so I'm not worried about that.
