Given that there is no consensus on any objective basis for ethics or morality, pretty much every post on this thread that deals explicitly with the issue of piracy will be viewed as invalid by a subset of the readers.flamepanther wrote:Read what you want out of it, but your argument was invalidated at least a page ago.aaron wrote:i keep trying to reread this thread but all i se is a bunch of BUT's.

Yeah, that's largely true... but he wasn't able to keep straight what "stealing" was, even by his own standards. Obviously it's not as "simple" as he says. That invalidates the "it's simple" point no matter what your moral standards are.Limewater wrote:Given that there is no consensus on any objective basis for ethics or morality, pretty much every post on this thread that deals explicitly with the issue of piracy will be viewed as invalid by a subset of the readers.

Aaron has posted very little. I don't see anywhere that he has been inconsistent with his definition of stealing.flamepanther wrote:Yeah, that's largely true... but he wasn't able to keep straight what "stealing" was, even by his own standards.

He said stealing is when you gain something other than by "legitimate" means. In his examples, he stated that digging through someone's trash would be OK. That's an activity that is generally not considered very legitimate and is frequently outlawed for a number of good reasons. Either it's not so simple what constitutes "legitimate" or it's not so simple to know what activities are legitimate or he needs to rethink his entire premise. Probably all three.Limewater wrote:Aaron has posted very little. I don't see anywhere that he has been inconsistent with his definition of stealing.
EDIT: Also, he seems to be trying to gain victory in an argument by saying "BUT BUT BUT BUT" which is obviously not a legitimate means to obtain it.
Re: Single Avast Pro license used by 744,651 pirates
He clearly considers digging in the garbage to be a legitimate activity, and not stealing. I don't see any inconsistency there. He defined what he considers to be stealing and does not appear, at least on this thread, to have deviated from it.flamepanther wrote:He said stealing is when you gain something other than by "legitimate" means. I don't think he's clearly defined what constitutes a legitimate activity then. Since digging through the garbage is typically illegal, then under what grounds is it legitimate? Moral grounds? Whose morals then? And then why does this same arbitrary set of standards not also cover piracy as legitimate, since it appears to be random?Limewater wrote:He clearly considers digging in the garbage to be a legitimate activity, and not stealing. this is ridiculous. the basic principle i'm trying to drive home is that piracy, whether or not you agree with it, has legal ramifications similar to that of stealing ("theft," as it were). it is up to the individual to determine as to whether or not they're okay with that risk.
i really don't need to define stealing and any attempts to take my initial post and pick it apart for no good reason other than to tell me i'm wrong and invalidate anything i have to say is a nasty forum tactic and a childish devil's advocate method of debate. hence the "BUT BUT BUT" posts.
and i'm sure this has already been posted:
