Fixing those clicky shoulder buttons

Post by Pullmyfinger »

My GBA SP's right trigger died on me a whole back and yesterday my Saturn's right trigger died too I also have a friend who had the same happen to his DS lite. I assume it has to do with it being the one pressed the most out of the trigger buttons and all those 3 things having the same type of clicky buttons.

Anyone fix these before or have any suggestions?

Open up, clean the contacts with a cotton bud (i think yanks call them q-tips?) with a little 100% rubbing alcohol on it. If that doesn't fix it i'm not sure what will.

take apart an old VCR or something else that has the same kinda clicky buttons and desolder them then put em in the saturn pad. i dunno about the SP but i think it uses the same kinda button too. i had to do this with my saturn lightgun, the trigger was fucked so i changed the button and it's good as new. (im gonna microswitch mod it later on though)
need console mods or repairs? check my thread here:

Tried everything in the thread except the replacing, nothing worked, out of desperation I dipped the button in alcohol and let it dry, amazingly, it now works like new!

I just started playing my DS lite, I've only played GBA games (which is what I have) so far. Should I be worried about damaging my R button and is there anything to keep in mind to avoid it?

Something else, not so related, should I get a screen protector for the touch screen before I start using it with the stylus (I haven't touched it yet, as I say I'm playing GBA only for now - and on the top screen, it seems better indicated if you're only using one screen to use the top one, a la GBA SP).

It was probably dirt or something trapped inside, I doubt there is a 100% sure way to avoid that happening, just don't play with dirty hands, both my GBA SP and Saturn controller came second-hand, so I don't know exctly what they've been through.

About the DS, get the screen protectors, mine are pelican brand and cost around $5 at gamestop, if you play lots of games like elite beat agents, bomberman land or trauma center, you are sure to scratch it sooner or later. As for which screen to use, I don't think it really matters, just use the one that suits you best, I only play GBA games on my SP because of the screen size.

I also recommend getting a screen protector. They're only about $6.00 (after taxes) and worth every penny. Playing KirbyCanvas Curse and the Super Mario 64 DS mini games can end up scratching your screen.

Ok I guess I'll get the screen protector before playing a stylus game.

Is there anything else you guys advise? There are some packs that have a protector and other junk that may actually be useful. I think the 2 stylus that came with my DS will be more than enough (it isn't really the sort of stuff that gets worn after a while, is it?)... I also have some improvised "pouches" to carry it on (usually a bit of bubble wrap, enough for the casing not to get scratched when I put it in my pocket or my backpack).
