The games you were never able to beat

Post by Erik_Twice »

We all have games that have pushed us against the wall, time and time again without a chance to beat them.

This is not about those games you can't beat because you aren't good at the genre or the particular mechanics. This is not about games you can beat just by practising.

Don't mention games like Battletoads or Gradius unless you have beaten other hard games of the genre. This is personal.

I have to say, I have been playing Economic simulation games and beaten every major game of the genre you can think of but there are a couple that I just haven't been able to beat:

Locomotion: The game itself is easy and never had a problem to pass any stage until I reached one that had very few, extremely small cities and only a handful of industries.

The size of the cities meant that the only profitable business was linking the industries.

The problem? That level had 3 AI that copied everything you did making it impossible to make a profit as nobody got enough cargo so as to pay the basic costs. No matter what you did, you had 3 people doing the same. It was just bad level design.

Railroad Tycoon 3: While the game itself was easily beaten the free Coast to Coast expansion was a nightmare. The namesake scenario required a huge deal of profit in very little time to be able to unlock the rights to build further into the US. It seems that even the hardcore fans have problems with this map and beating it is huge achievement.

Industry Giant II: A map without a huge dilemma: To focus on the fast growing town, leading to a very poor start, or to focus elsewhere until the city grows, leading to a poor endgame. I was never able to get the required money fast enough.

Those three are probably the only games I'm good at that I can't beat of my collection.

for the life of me I cannot beat Super Mario Bros. All the others in the series are no problem for me to beat. But I just can't beat the first. It's sad.

saying that power-ups help isn't so much a "protip" as it as an "obvious statement."

Gekioh: Shooting King. I get all the way to the final form of Shienryu and die every time. The game is not really that hard, but once I get to the final boss it really starts to kick my ass. I feel like I need perfect memory and reaction time to be able to beat Shienryu.
