Biweekly

Post by Luke »

I keep getting two definitions:

Noun: A periodical that appears every two weeks or twice a week.

What? How can it be both?

I always thought biweekly equals every other week, and that semiweekly equals twice a week.

What gives?

biweekly is when you're sexually attracted to both twice a week and every two weeks.

I hate the word biweekly because I never could figure out which it meant. So it really does mean both? Way to fuck us up Merriam Webster.

I don't even use the term anymore. I just say "twice a week" or "every two weeks".

Luke is correct. Biweekly refers to something that occurs once every two weeks. Semiweekly refers to something that occurs twice a week. If someone uses the term "biweekly" to refer to something that occurs twice a week, then he or she is using the term incorrectly.

I hope that clears up any confusion.

In this country we usually just say fortnightly to avoid confusion. Biweekly never really made much sense to me.

Websters would like to disagree with you:

So would Wikitionary:

The Online Dictionary:

And Encarta:

That's what I thought, but when you search the word biweekly, I get both definitions from several places.

Oh well, at least I schooled my office on the word anxious. One chick here uses that word so often I finally had to correct her.
