I have that one too, you have to bypass the door sensor, when inserting your PS1 Import or Backup disc. It works by keeping the switch down with a spring for the PSX or a Tab Tape for the smaller PSOne. The PS2 will need a slide tool of Flip Top. The Mod Chip is so much more convenient, an easier solder job on the larger board of the grey PSX.
I just got a PSOne today, because my PS1's laser is starting to die out. So, if at all possible, I want a mod solution that works well on a PSOne. How hard is it to install a modchip in this model?
A pain, the solder points are very small. Can be done with a very steady hand and a fine tip pencil soldering iron. I shamefully admit taking the lazy way out and buying a premodded PSOne board from that GoCybershop link a few years ago. Unfortunately out of stock now. The grey PSX are easier to solder, did three of them, nice having the cart port too.

The boot disc does work, you basically place the included tape over the door switch. Boot the PSX Change Disc, wait for the prompt and then put in your game disc. Because the door switch is always on, be careful when to open the door. The disc brake no longer will work.

I just went ahead and bought a modchip. If the task looks to be too daunting when I actually attempt it, I'll just ask someone else who is better at soldering to help.

Stop psyching me out! I know it's difficult, and I'll almost certainly screw up, but at least let me act in blissful ignorance for a while!

That 7th contact looks particularaly dangerous; right next to that chip, and I can't even tell what 3 and 6 are even pointing at! I wonder if Tom Thumb is any good with a soldering iron...

Click the link, you can blow up the pics there. #6 looks tricky to me, best to presolder the bare wires first.
