Looking for list of Hori Shmups

Post by gennss »

I'm looking for a list of the BEST Hori shmups... I know einhander is great, but not sure about the rest. What are the top hori shmups I should look into?

Maybe I'm way off on this, but I thought Hori was a 3rd party gaming hardware company. I didn't know they made games too. And Einhander was made by Square. Unless you mean horizontal shmups.

Since the h is capitalized, that just makes things unnecessarily confusing.

Salamander (aka LifeForce) is a classic - as is Gradius and Parodius! Konami made some absolutely stellar hori's.

As for something a bit more recent, I cannot recommend Deathsmiles (XBox 360) enough! I'm sure there will be several or more shmup fans on here who would concur..

Yeah just figured that out. The op capitalized Hori so I was thinking of the company. Anyways, any system do you prefer? I could fire off tons. For the PC theres Ether Vapor, Steel Savior and Cloudphobia. Deamcast has Border Down. PS2 has Gradius V and R Type Final. Theres a ton more but being at work makes it hard because I can't look on my shelf. Those are some of my favorites.

The Gamecube version of Ikaruga has a option to tate the screen and change the controls to give it a horizontal shmup feel. I'm not sure about the DC version though.

The Darius series. You fight fish-shaped space ships, it's pretty excellent.

SNES: Darius Force
SNES: Darius Twin
PS1/Saturn: Darius Gaiden
PS1: G. Darius
Saturn: Darius II
PSP: Darius Burst

I'd recommend Darius Gaiden. Best in the series IMO, and its on both the PS1 and the Saturn. The Saturn version is better, and pretty cheap too.
