Overrated game of the Year: Red Dead Redemption

Ha, I totally forgot that this came out this year- you might think it was overrated, and I can see where you are coming from- but (for me) that might compete with Mass Effect 2

But ultimately this all comes down to personal opinion, which is part of the reason I've started to avoid making statements about the Best or Worst title of any year, era, genre, console, etc. No matter what, someone will disagree with you because to someone that game you choose to rag on may happen to be one of their favorites. I especially don't like doing it for retro games because then someone will have fond childhood memories attached to the game, no matter how good or bad, and I don't want to be the person who bashes their favorite thing as a kid.

Jeez, man, ease up on SP! You're WAY too belligerent about your beat-em-ups. Everyone knows you don't like the game, but seriously? Worst game of the year? Worse than Naughty Bear, Attack of the Movies, the "Imagine" series, and for all the other shovelware of the year, for that matter? You have all the right in the world to dislike the game, but give credit where credit is due, at the very least. For example, I really disliked Red Dead Redemption, but I will certainly recognize that it is a well-made game, and is by no means a "bad" game; I just don't like it.

Hey, I had to put up with someone claiming Deadly Premonition was the worst game of the year. If anything, I felt it was one of the most underrated, but I'm a fan of retro survival horror (which is what it feels like). I've also recently started watching the first season of Twin Peaks specifically to get in the proper mindset for this game.

Gamerforlife didn't like Scott Pilgrim, and there's no shame in that. Lisalover1, you really loved it, and there's no shame in that either. Don't worry about the conjecture and understand that there will be times when your opinions won't match. Lisa, you will probably trash one of Gamerforlife's favorite games at some point, if you haven't already. I have to agree myself. Out of what I played, I have to say that actually, I'd say it was the worst game I played this year (It was still decent though) and certainly the most overrated game I personally played. I'd edit my choices but I'm too lazy.

I'm really curious as to why you guys found it so unappealing. From some of the responses I have heard, you would think that Brian O'Malley personally spit on your face, or something!

I have to agree myself. Out of what I played, I have to say that actually, I'd say it was the worst game I played this year (It was still decent though) and certainly the most overrated game I personally played. I'd edit my choices but I'm too lazy.

I was excited to play a retro-style beat 'em up. What I found was a grind-fest. A well designed brawler should be able to be beat on one credit, or at the very least through some credit feeding. Grinding takes away the pick up and play quality of the genre. This is the same reason that I haven't even finished the superior Castle Crashers.

Plus, even though I haven't read the graphic novels or yet seen the movie, something about the whole Scott Pilgrim thing really perturbs me. Maybe it's because I'm old and crotchety, but it smacks of the same agitating retro-chic that made all those hipsters want to buy clothes that looked like they were from the 70s about 5-10 years ago. Now that the retro gaming is becoming part of that same scene, shit like Scott Pilgrim has become a bit of a standard bearer for what annoys me about it.

Huh. That's interesting, because that's exactly the reason why I love the game. Unlike other Beat-Em'-Ups, Scott Pilgrim actually gives you a chance to beat the game. You don't have to grind a bit if you don't want to, but if you get stuck, at least the game gives you the option to improve your chances. Too many games in the genre go about difficulty in a deliberately unfair manner, leaving you with no option but to start the game aaaaaalllll the way over again just to try at one more stage. Is this retro? Definitely. Is it appealing? I can see how it might be. But the important thing is that it doesn't necessarily mesh nearly as well with a Beat-Em'-Up, as does, say, a Platformer. In the former genre, super-long stages make repeated attempts a total chore. In short, I like games that I actually have a chance to beat, and SP is one of the few games in the genre that makes it possible.
