PC problems - freezing and lighting problems.

Post by alienjesus »

Ok, so a few weeks back my laptop PC was unplugged (running off the battery) and the screen started to flicker, and after a minute or so, it went off completely. After squinting for a bit, I noticed that everything was still running, but the backlight had switched off. Closing the laptop lid and opening it again once or twice made it come back on, and I kinda just thought it was a weird one off. However, it's happened several times since then, normally when unplugged, but once or twice when plugged in too. Its also being more stubborn to coming back on.

Since then, I've noticed a significant drop in my battery life of my laptop when unplugged. I've been meaning to go get it fixed, but as it seemed like a relatively minor issue with the backlight, I've been putting it off (I need this laptop for university!).

Today however, it's been developing a new issue - irregular freezing. When it does this, the mouse pointer freezes and the keyboard doesnt work, and Ctrl+Alt+Delete doesnt work. The laptop normally runs fine for a couple of hours and then freezes out of the blue. I'm really concerned because I have no money to get it fixed right now, and I need this laptop for a big, lengthy, time consuming final year media degree project for the next 3 months or so. I ran an antivirus scan (I use the free version of Avast) and it turned up nothing. I don't really know what else to do - the issues don't happen on startup, theres no program that causes it as far as I can tell (it could be google chrome, because thats generally always open) and I cant see anything that suggests what it could be.

Does anyone have any ideas what could be causing these problems? It seems unlikely, but might they be connected in any way? It's really worrying, I'm kinda relying on this computer - not having access to it could potentially mean the difference between passing university with a 1st (the best grade) or a 3rd (the worst one thats not a complete fail).

So annoying :(

Unfortunately that sounds like your laptop might be making bids on the farm. If it was just locking up it could be windows issues that could be sorted but if the screen backlight is shutting off and the keyboard stops responding that doesn't sound very good. But do this, open up control panel, admin tools, events. Look in the windows system events section for any errors or warnings. They might give you clues if you look at the codes.

I cant see this. I'm on Vista, any idea where I'd find it in there?
EDIT: Never mind, found it

EDIT 2: Theres quite a few errors. about 7 of them are associated with the same 2 Event ID's. There another one which isnt the same as the rest though. These are all in todays details, which is when the main problem (with freezing) started. Could that mean a windows error is a possibility?

Anyway, here are the help pages I was linked to for the 3 errors, I dont really understand them:
http://social.technet.microsoft.com/wik ... tions.aspx

http://www.microsoft.com/products/ee/tr ... &LCID=2057

http://www.microsoft.com/products/ee/tr ... &LCID=2057

Not very helpful seeing as two pages dont even seem to exist. :S

Edit 3: Looking back, the errors with ID Code 6008 and 7000 have been happening for a while. I also noticed some 'critical' errors. Oh god, my laptop's a wreck ;_;

Does do the same thing when plugged in, not running from the battery.

The freezing yes, the lighting not NEARLY as often, but it has happened a bit.

Damn, I think my laptops had it. I REALLY can't afford a new one :(

I get some services complaining about starting sometimes without any other ill effects. It depends what they are though. It sounds like you're looking in the Application section though. You sure you picked System?
