NES Top Loader question

Post by IIICCCPIII »

I have a 101, and I kind've had a good setup going on before I replaced my old NES. I didn't know there weren't AV cables on the side, so I'm stuck with an RF... The only problem is it makes my Box and NES very snowy, and none of my other RF adapters help. I was looking for something that could maybe change the RF output to an RCA, and I came across this.

I have a 4 channel switcher hooked up to my tv, so Could I just run the RF straight to the modulator, and hook up the RCas to my splitter, or do I have this ass backwards? If not, what would you recommend productwise for converting RF to RCA?

That's not going to make the signal look any less snowy.

If you don't mind spending an arm and a leg, iirc there IS a revision of the NES 2 that has A/V out. It was given only to those who had to send in their NES 2's for replacement. As you can imagine it's pretty expensive if you can manage to find one...

You are going to have to do a fairly simple mod.

Hmm. I wonder if anyone here would mod my top loader for composite (or even S-Video!) for a reasonable fee....

If you don't want to mod it yourself, there's a guy called akaviolence who does an AV mod, among other various NES toploading mods for $40 if I recall correctly. I believe he also does a LED light mod.

Even with the AV mod, there are weird vertical lines all over the place. It has something to do with insufficient shielding over the power supply messing with the video signal.

If you REALLY want a toploader with av out, why not buy an AV famicom and an NES-to-Famicom adapter? Either that, or just buy an original NES? Both of those alternatives give out a better picture quality than the US toploader. I know there was that super-rare version that Nintendo sent out to people who needed repairs but those are almost IMPOSSIBLE to find anymore. I understand if you want to work with what you already have, though.

Just mod the top loader you have now, as Hatta posted above. If you can't do it yourself, there's definitely people here on the forum that would do if for you.

Thanks for all the responses. I'm still trying to figure out what I'd do.

Also, I'm almost positive my TV is snowy because the Top loader I bought came with one of those cheap RFs that you just stick in rather than screw in. This has to be the problem, because my old NES had fine reception.

Either way, thanks for the help, and I'll keep the advice in mind.

Here's all the suggestions that have been made, in the order I would consider them in (first being my first choice and so on)...

1) Modify your NES to have composite output
2) Pay some one to AV mod your console for you
3) Get an AV Famicom and a NES-Famicom converter
4) Just use a toaster
5) Buy an AV top loader

First two choices are the same, just depends if you can do it yourself or not. Either way, that would be my first choice. An AV Famicom would be a good second choice because it would definitely open up possibilities for you. But if owning a Famicom doesn't interest you, then I would just use a toaster and call it a day. Buying an AV top loader NES, that's just not something I would consider.

If you have a RF slide switch box, don't use it. You can do a direct connect with a screw in adaptor until you get that mod done.
