If you're talking about an old SD rear projection set. . . they're cheap enough I guess. But not very good. If you want a big HD one (I have a 46" sony 720p set) then it's going to have the same pitfalls as any HD tv will with low res signals. There's no specific differences in retro games on a rear projection HDTV or a regular LCD or plasma.
Mitsubishi is the only company still making rear projection sets, they're DLP. If you want a huge screen you're not going to find a better deal. A 60" set for under $1000.

I think they have a real issue with burn in, and light guns don't typically work on them.
