Question about Gamestop return service

Post by nightwalker »

Well like the title implies this is basically a question for anyone that works at a Gamestop or EB.

I bought an Xbox 360 refurbished took it home and it turn on, played hard drive games and played dvds. But the only problem it had was that when you put in a game it says play dvd and it doesn't played the game. I took it as quickly as I could to the gamestop that I bought it (it only went 1 and a half hour). They gave me my refund.

But my question would be what do they do with those consoles? There was another guy that brought a wii that it read the disc but when it started it froze. Why I'm asking this you would think? Well the reason is simple I used to work at Sam Goody (Oh!!! good times) and when someone brought a damaged cd or whatnot we had to destroy it and then the company asked for a refund. We had a nice manager and he told us if we wanted anything from damaged items we should ask him and he would give it to us.

So does Eb, Gamestop do the same? Because if they do that Wii that had that problem with the dvd drive you can mod it to be one heck of a homebrew console and you can even use a USB loader and don't need the dvd drive for anything.

Mod Edit!: Don't name drop people on things that can potentially get them fired and or arrested without cause. Theft of any kind is bad, no matter what the excuse.

Im gonna leave your edit but I clearly state that Im not asking someone to commit a crime or do theft. I just wanted to know what they do with the returned consoles that was all.

I'm sure managers do different things at different stores but when I worked at Funcoland (best store ever) we couldn't take anything. If it was broken, we boxed it up and it was sent back to corporate. They refurbed it and I guess eventually it got sent to a store with low stock of that item.

If you want a Wii that doesn't read discs, look for one on craigslist. That's actually a pretty good idea as they'd have to sell it cheap.

That's a good question you raised. In some stores (Home Depot), it seems that the item is put back on the shelf. Nothing pisses me off to bring something home that clearly has been opened by someone else and is missing stuff or is not working.

I don't know specifically, but I have heard to people taking 360s to GameStop that have had their serial number banned from Live and GameStop turning around selling them as a used 360, and the buyer not being able to access Live because its banned. In other words, for trade ins they don't check beyond to see if it turns on.

Very true, I read some where that one can buy a paint can full of water there. Anytime I shop at the Big Box I dig towards the back, front packages are usually a return item.

 This is a very good point! A very good reason to be wary of any used 360, PS3 or Wii console from Gamestop, Craigs List or anywhere for that matter. A caution to be sure refundable in case there is an online ban or lockout for a given console.

I dont know if this is on the same topic, but I work at a mall. Some years ago when gamestop stopped selling PS1 games, I learned that the local gamestop had all their unsold playstation consoles and leftover games destroyed and sent to the trash compactor! :(

I cant tell if thats what they would now with newer consoles?

I mean that there are old playstations and N64s everywhere, but to destroy them like that, theres plenty of poor children that could have done with one of those consoles.

so it may be possible that consoles may be discarded like that in the future!

Thats my point!!! We used to this at sam goody and I was wondering if anybody that works at gamestop can tell me what they do with those consoles. The console that I took back I doubt that they can fix it. That console must have had the dvd drive switched or something. And if they send it to destroy I think you can talk with the manager or something so you can take it and do something with it parts, trying to fix it, etc.
