I played Deadly Shadows , great game, eff 3rd person view (cept at corners sometimes... heheh)... sick medieval steam punk atmosphere... bows and arrows, daggers, shadows, magic, first person stealthing, that game did it all. Inhabiting a town as a nocturnal, convincingly voiced thief with his fences and equipment shops and having to evade the City Watch while footing it to the next place of opportunity. Having to know your habitat. Conspiracies and prophecies, all cloak and dagger and whatnot. A particularly immersive lock picking system (on the xBox controller anyway). Mystery and intrigue (ooh). Ascending the ranks into the Keepers, the organization that taught him the craft of subterfuge before he rebelled. While separate from the organization, it seems he is mentioned in the Keeper prophecies as the "Brethen and Betrayer." You get yur hideout and yer equipment and the environment and atmosphere come together to give the game a sort of dark "Robin Hood" feel to it. It's solid stuff. There's even a completely unnerving one-off horror experience. Worth looking into, for sure.
I hear the originals were quite worthy as well. I hear there was once a rope arrow, .. and tHat's cool. Not to mention, from what I hear, it's pretty much THE first stealth game. It's the stuff legends are made of. And something about Warren Spectre's involvement with the originals, who also had a heavy hand in Deus Ex. I've only heard good things about the first 2. Homemade maps and sich. Anyway...

Re: Thief Series
I can vouch for how good the first 2 are however i hate the third so that may not help
Re: Thief Series
I've actually wanted to try out the first game for quite some time now, but I'm pretty sure my PC is too crappy for me to go through the trouble of buying or even pirating it.
But what do you mean by first stealth game? You mean the first game to play out in a fully shadowy stealth manner?

It's a six years old game. Pretty sure your PC can handle it.
Re: Thief Series
I played the first one on PC. From 1998 or 1999 I think. AWESOME games with an amazing atmosphere.

It looks a bit dated now, and to be honest I haven't played it since 2000, but I'm sure it's worth giving it a go if you have the time.
Of course, the thieve's guild and dark brotherhood missions on The Elder Scrolls IV are pretty much the same thing, except... better.
The dialogue on Thief was great, though.

0h yeah, Metal Gear had sneaking... and it seems Tenchu came out the same year as the first Thief. Wonder where I got that. Is it the first to actually use light and dark tho? Was there that sort of AI and lighting programming abilities then? Either way, maybe I'm just mistakenly recalling that I heard it was the first stealth game... o well.Veno wrote:But what do you mean by first stealth game? Re: Thief Series
I always thought Thief was the first stealth game the very least it's the first stealth fps. And there are some elements to thief i would like to see more of like the importance of darkness and melee combat is only a last resort and should be avoided as much as possible.
And little things like moving the corpses or unconscious enemies so they wont be spotted.
