I was playing a few games on my original xbox in CoinOps (DigDug & BurgerTime). It was a bit frustrating trying to use the D-pad (I have Logitech wireless controllers).
I'm wondering if it would work better if I used a stick like one of those fighting stick controllers. Has anyone used them with CoinOps on the Xbox? Do they work better?

I don't think the stick adds to accuracy for the Retro games, just more of the authentic feel. More of what one is comfortable in using. Good to have at least one Arcade stick handy to try out though. Pacman in particular, I love the red ball stick tactical switch feel changing directions before reaching the next corner.

What I find is that it's difficult to control the chef in Burger Time with the D-Pad. It seems that I go too far or not enough to switch to a ladder. I'm thinking that a stick would work better.
Same goes for DigDug. I will want to go down to the bottom of the earth and then cut over to be underneath a rock. Once I'm directly underneath, I will go straight up under a rock and get ready to drop it.
What happens is that when I want to go up, it sometimes continues to go left/right and then up such that I'm not lined up underneath the rock anymore.
I'm thinking that using a stick would help here.

A good Arcade stick with tactical clicks of leaf switches do help, clear indicator of direction.

I use the Gamester 'official' stick on my Xbox. Works like a charm on MAME etc.

Is this the one that you have?Niode wrote:I use the Gamester 'official' stick on my Xbox. Works like a charm on MAME etc.
I was doing some more research and was toying with the idea of getting the $99 x-arcade stick. The only drawback is that it's wired.
There are also some wireless Tekken fighting sticks by Hori that would be good I think.

If you have multiple consoles, a PSX Arcade controller might be a better investment. Wide range of adaptors available for various consoles as well as PC and Mac.

A stick will only be as good as the type you are use to for the game. I know that did not make a lot of sense but if you try to play Pacman with an arcade stick for a fighting game it will be a nightmare. Most of the old coinop games: Digdug, Galaxian, Burgertime, Pacman, etc, use a 4 way joystick. However, most all fighting games, use an 8 way stick. The mechanics inside are just wrong.
I do not know of a dedicated 4 way stick for any more modern console. I know you can buy an arcade stick and swap out the parts, but I dont think that is what you are looking for.

@fastbilly1 - what you said, makes perfect sense. Over at AtariAge, folks were recommending that I pick up a regular fighting stick and then swap out the gate for one that is 4-way or can change on the fly to 4-way or 8-way.
I'm toying with the idea of getting the x-arcade joystick for $99. Do these have the ability to switch between 4-way & 8-way? i'll have to read the FAQs further tonight.
My other option might be to build my own stick.
EDIT: It looks like you do have that option:
