So we are nearing round 1 of a competition in game design. With our submission we have to supply a short description of our game and how it correlates with the theme ("Imagine a world where technology enables a sustainable environment.")
Tell me what you think? Does this sound like an interesting game to play?
-------
World
A dyson sphere is a hypothetical megastructure around a star. The inside surface can support life and collect 100% of the energy of the star.
The game takes place inside of a dyson sphere constructed around 3 stars with independent planets. The stars and planets spawn randomly upon initiating the game, the planets take on 1 of 6 forms: desert, ocean, forest, lava, industrial, or purple; each with a gas color correlating with its type.
A civilization on the crust of the dyson sphere use their own resources to prosper. In turn they generate pollution, which they dispose of by launching piles of garbage into the center of the sphere. These garbage balls are pulled around by the gravity of each planet and sun, via a vector field.
Trash clutters up space and can crash into planets inflicting massive damage. Enough damage and it will fall out of its orbit and into the dyson sphere, destroying a large portion of it.
As well as creating garbage, the inhabitants of the dyson sphere ruin their own ecosystem. Pollution is created in the forms of colored gas: red, green, and blue. Green gas is air put off by the forest, blue gas is water vapor created by the oceans and lakes, and red gas is smog created by the city. Everything is dependent on each other to prosper, city can not grow with out forest to cultivate, forest can't grow with out water to drink, and oceans will dry up or flood if everything isn't balanced.
Game Play Concepts
The player controls a space girl named Rockette who can run, grab, push, fly, and inhale. By inhaling gases she can inflate to the size of a large planet. There by influencing the gravity field so the player can manage the garbage asteroids.
Options for disposing of garbage include:
-Throwing garbage into the sun; downside being the sun may go supernova and destroy its own solar system.
-Pulling garbage close enough to a sun to heat it. You can then launch the molten garbage at destroyed sections of the dyson sphere to repair it. Garbage doesn't stay molten for to long though.
-Prevent the creation of garbage; Each of the central planets contain gas that can be used to balance the pollution levels on the dyson sphere. Inhale the gas and bring it back to the dyson sphere! (e.g. Purple gas is made of red and blue).
-Or get creative with it!
There are also mini-games to play on the surface of planets to unlock special tools to help the player along the way.
Correlation with Theme
After constructing a large sphere to cleanly collect the energy of the sun, pollution still plagues the “Orbital” inhabitants with over foresting and garbage waste. Technology is so crucial because it allows us to maintain balance, which is what gives us the gift of life. Thus you the player must learn what to let die, and what to help live!
Does this sound fun?
