I love this site.

Talk about just about anything else that is non-gaming here, but keep it clean

Let them cry.

Well, we have the ability to edit or delete other people's posts, warn users, ban them if necessary, ban spammers, move or merge topics, and generally enforce the rules of the website. We also do our best to mediate any arguments that might occur, or at least discipline participants if things get out of hand.

And then there's the secret forum...
FYI, that forum's topics show up every now and then on th RB front page.
Yes, but what you don't know is how long the threads are, including the one in which we discuss which ones of you we hate the most.

When I was an admin in a forum a few years ago, the secret forum was mainly used to settle disputes among the moderation team.... in public. Yeah it was a very immature forum.

I got in a fight with another member of the administration team (don't know why a forum with 300 members, and about 50 active needed 3 admins but anyway) because I locked a thread full of flames and name calling, and he reopened it, cause he said, he made the topic it's his own to lock when he wants to, and that I wasn't as active a member as he was and that I shouldn't talk back at him because of that.

Did I mention he didn't pm me about this but he made a thread in the secret forum where he and his girlfriend moderator attacked me? I got fed up with the forum, cause he was really immature, he kept calling people's opinions stupid, and no one said anything cause he was the most active member by faaaaaaaaaaaaar.

So I deleted my account as an act of protest, and left the place, without even bothering to answer him, but I only sent a small resignation pm to the headAdmin.

Last I heard the forum went down hill really fast after that, and that guy got in a fight with the HeadAdmin/owner of the forum and left (I think they fought cause the HeadAdmin liked chocobo racing and that other guy told him he was stupid cause it's a children's game. Did I mention the forum was really immature and they got into fights over the most trivial things?)

Lesson learned? Never let a member behave badly, no matter how important you think he is for the community.

After reading threads on 1up and Microsoft's board for the 360, I definitely can see stuff like this happening a lot. Again, I really don't post on any other boards so I don't know much about all the internet flame wars, but I read a lot of gaming news and see tons of negativity. The way people discuss things on the internet really interests me. I have this theory that people use boards and threads as a punching bag: they can say whatever they want without harmful repercussions. In fact going a step farther, its like playing a sandbox game like GTA, they can post a really polarizing opinion just to see what happens. I don't know, I'm rambling; I guess my point is a lot of discussions online are so far removed from reality.

Yeah. I try to avoid getting in heated internet fights since I consider them absolutely pointless, if not demeaning for the one who takes part. Lot's of times I end up writing a huge post during an argument only to delete it thinking "It's not worth the hassle". Forums are great places to debate, arguments are only worth it when it's something important.

That's exactly what happens on the internet; anonymity grants people a great deal of freedom. Although personally, if I post something serious or controversial, I always do a test of if I would be willing to back up my claim face to face before I post. I want to take responsibility for what I say, even on the internet.
