NFL: Should a losing team go to the play offs?

Post by saturnfan »

For those who are NFL fans, this year has brought an interesting scenario: The NFC West is so weak that the Rams or the Seahawks have a distinct possibility of going to the playoffs with a 7-9 record.

While I am fairly confident that one of the teams will end in 8-8, the league seems to be up in arms over this non-issue (at least to me). As I see it, you win the division, you go to play-offs. End of story. That is how it has always been, and that is how it should remain.

Thoughts?

On ESPN, I used their playoff simulator and ended up with the Seahawks going with a 7-9 record. And honestly, I don't think that's fair. A 10-6 team isn't going to make it to the playoffs because of this, and another 10-6 team or an 11-5 team is going to have to go to St. Louis or Seattle for their first round matchup. The NFL is going to have a big problem with this. The fans of one of the Packers/Bears/Giants/Eagles/Saints is going to be pissed that their team isn't able to go to the playoffs while one of the NFC West teams is, and the NFL is probably going to have to change the rules.

Why not? It works for the BCS.
Maybe now Nintendo will acknowledge Metroid has a fanbase?

Well the NFC West might be the weakest division of all time, but this is very rare.. I say yes, just keep the system in place, the only bad out of this is that the division winner will play a home game in the first round..

I don't think that UConn deserves a BCS bid either. Give it to Boise!

I think he was being sarcastic.

The NFL's rules are fine. The BCS is a mess.

The teams are separated into divisions for a reason. You win your division, you're in. BUT, that should not guarantee you a home game. That's when record should matter.

That's exactly it.

On a side note, it looks like those NHL Penguins will be going into the playoffs playing at home. As long as they keep on doing awesome, that is! No reason why they won't.

I think there should be a special rule to not allow a sub 500 team into the playoffs even if they win their division.

They could just take the next highest team in the conference that is not in the play offs, there might need to be a lot of tie breakers, but they have those set up anyway.

That 7-9 team is just going to get butchered anyway, why not make that wild card round more interesting with a semi decent team.

As a packer fan, I'd be really pissed if the packers didn't make the playoffs with a 11-5 record while the rams/seahawks made it with a sub-500 record. And what's even worse is that one of those teams is going to be hosting their playoff game in the wild card round! I at-least think that whoever has a better record then their opponent, even if their a wild card team, should have home field if they have a better record.
