Recommend me some PS3 games!

Post by Crabmaster2000 »

Recently I was lucky enough to buy a YLOD PS3 for cheap and get it running again. So now that I've got the system I need a game or two to play on it. The only genres I've really been paying any attention to have been the RPG and Fighting games.

Here is a small list of games I'll already be on the lookout for:

Final Fantasy XIII
3D Dot Game Heroes
Blazblue
Street Fighter IV
Disgaea 3
Valkyria Chronicles
Demon's Soul
Eternal Sonata
Heavy Rain
Batman Arkham Asylum
Little Big Planet
Resonance of Fate

What are some of your guys favorite games (from any genre) that I should add to my list? I'm not a huge fan of Sports, FPS or Racing, but there are definitely exceptions to all of those genres so I'm open to suggestions only if you think a particular game really shines.

I'd also like to find some good Puzzle and Shmup games if you know of any. And keep in mind I'm only interested in retail released games. Nothing that is downloadable only please.

Grand Theft Auto 4
Little Big Planet
Star Wars: The Force Unleashed
Bioshock

I know you said that you're not really into FPS, but let me just tell you, Bioshock isn't ordinary. When the first Bioshock came out, the entire FPS genre seemed very stale to me. Let me tell you, this game is far from a typical FPS. The atmosphere in the first two games is very survival horror and all around creepy. Every area, every room looks great and is usually filled with tons of items you can pick up. And instead of just running around with a gun, you also can gain special abilities Examples would be shooting electricity, fire, or ice from your hand. You can even use telekinesis. I could go on and on, but if you're interested you could read up on it. I suggest you download the demo for the first game. That's what I did, and ended up buying the game first chance I got.

Resonance of Fate - unique and challenging RPG set in a beautiful, yet dark futuristic world and with a awesome combat system and some great characters. The game got some lacklustre reviews at the time of release, but the general reception was very good, and if you don't mind a bit of a challenge in your JRPGs, then Resonance of Fate might very well be for you.

Aquanaut's Holiday - ah, this game might not seem that appealing at first, but believe me, it's as addicting and enthralling as it is relaxing. In it you play a reporter sent to a remote tropical island to discover the whereabouts of a missing research scientist - you do this by exploring the under-water world in a sophisticated one-man submarine. Most of the time you'll be snapping shots of fish and marvelling at the beauty of the graphics and animations, but the meat of the gameplay comes in the form of exploration - finding clues that open up new and increasingly impressive areas to explore.

@Ziggy

Grand Theft Auto and Force Unleashed dont really appeal to me. I initially wrote of Bioshock, but I've heard good things from others and since you wrote so passionately about it I'll check out the Demo as you suggested. Its been a while since I've gotten into a FPS, but who knows, this one might surprise me.

As for Little Big Planet I've got some questions. If I'm not into building my own levels and playing online does the game have much value? I've also only got one controller at this time so is it any fun playing solo?

@Bootaaay

Thanks for reminding me about Resonance of Fate. I remember thinking it looked interesting and then somehow just forgot all about it. Definitely looks like my kind of game.

I've never heard of Aquanaut's Holiday. Sounds very unique and interesting. Does the game have a defined goal? I dont like my games to be to sandbox-y. Can you keep progressing a story or keep completing objectives or something? Are there any other games you would compare it to?

Thanks for the suggestions so far guys!! Keep em coming.

I can't really compare it to any other game, it's quite unique. There's always a goal, in that you're looking for clues to find the missing research scientist - but it's not always obvious what is and what isn't a clue, so you have to explore the underwater world looking for anything out of the ordinary. When you discover a clue, the submarine will play one of the scientists audio logs that progresses the (rather vague) storyline. Also, discovering species of fish and plant life gives you credits, which you need to spend on batteries to activate sonar buoys that extend the area you can explore.

It's really not a game for everyone - but if you enjoy exploring and are looking for something a bit more relaxing, you can't go wrong with Aquanaut's Holiday. If you need a bit more gameplay then check out Afrika, which sees you completing various photography missions for magazines/research teams etc. There's no story, but overall there's more to do than in Aquanaut's (although exploring the environment is more enjoyable in AH).

If you do plan on picking up Aquanaut's, you'll have to import either the Asian/HK release or the Korean release - the Japanese release has no English support and the game was never released in the US or EU (unlike Afrika).

I've had a TON of fun playing LBP and I haven't played online or built my own levels (yet). I've played through the game solo and it was a lot of fun. I also played it a lot with my brother (locally) and it's the same story with these new 2D platformers with simultaneous multiplayer: A lot of fun, but more challenging since you have to cooperate. Still, a lot of fun.

As far as playing online goes, I haven't tried it myself. Though after you finish the regular levels, there's a whole community of user created levels for you to play. I have the game of the Year Edition, which came with some extras. The second one is coming out, and I've read that it'll have all the levels from the first game, so if that's true you might wanna wait to pick up the sequel instead. Though the first one is probably really cheap now.

And again, you should download the demo for this and check it out. That's what I did, and ended up buying the game right away.

Hell yeah. Not only are the single player levels on the disk so much fun, there are over 2 million levels online, and while plenty are crap if you select as search criteria the amount of stars a level has, the 5 star levels are all excellent examples of great level design.

Also infamous is an excellent sandbox style action platformer game. Saint's Row 2 is also a very fun GTA clone, and it's more GTA than GTA4 itself.

Sounds like a neat game that I would have liked to at least try had it been released over here. It would be great to have some games like this that I can play around my young son. I didnt specify in my first post, but right now I'm only looking for games I'd find locally. Once I've tapped out that pool then I can look at imports.

Little Big Planet sounds like I need to add it to my list. Good co-operative 2 player games are going to be a big bonus once I get a second controller.

Do most games have demo's online now? I havent really checked out the PS Store, but it seems that I really should.

Don't know about most, but many of them have. LittleBigPlanet, Valkyria Chronicles and inFamous do have demos available on PSN so those 3 should be the first ones you try imo.
