WE know what SMAS is. The majority of people that own Wiis do not.

Even if your assumption about the majority of Wii owners is correct (of which I am skeptical), the majority of people who buy collector's edition games or who are big enough Mario fans to care about the anniversary almost definitely do. The very few that don't know that probably won't care, because they'll still be getting it because it's an anniversary collector's item more than because of the actual game.

Considering I know more people with Wiis that are over the age of 40 than my age or younger, I would think that yes, most don't know about Super Mario All-Stars.

I have a few responses...

1) My experience is not similar. I don't know *anyone* over 40 with a Wii--only people around my own age or younger. Basing your idea of the userbase on just people you know is highly subjective and not at all reliable. I suspect that neither of our personal experiences represent the actual makeup of the Wii userbase.

2) Do you think most of these people you know will be buying the anniversary collection? It doesn't seem like something that appeals to the 40+ crowd. If not, they're not relevant to the topic.

3) If they've never played Super Mario All-Stars and don't know what it is, then even if they buy the anniversary collection, there's no way Nintendo can possibly be fooling them into buying something they've bought before, as originally suggested.

To speak as someone who works at a video game store we all know of (and both simultaneously love and hate) selling this game to hardcore Wii owners and longtime Nintendo fans is next to impossible. All of them already have it on SNES or downloaded them off of the VC.

Older people who never played the originals and the young starting families are a freaking shoo-in though, we sold the hell out of it to anyone with a pulse and a few bucks that had even at least a passing interest in Mario.

At it's price it's cheaper than almost any other Nintendo title on the system New OR Used, comes with enough special bonuses in the book and CD to make it worth the money AND it's all assembled in a spiffy looking box that's easy to eBay in a few years for a profit ala the Metroid collection.

End result? We sold it like gangbusters and hit our store's allocation for it almost two weeks ago.

I might not be satisfied with it as I'm a hardcore gamer with a long running collection but for anyone else who doesn't or nostalgia seekers it's actually a pretty good deal.

You've gotta think about the bigger picture, your experience may be a certain way, but the fact of the matter is Nintendo sold over 80 million units of the thing and the majority of consumers are families and older people who found it a fun way to relive their youth.

The audience is quite literally staggeringly huge, and with a name like Mario you don't have anything but good press and everyone talking about how fun it is. Heck, New Super Mario Bros went multi-platinum within a month and it still sells a fair amount!

When you think about it like that it's gonna be an instant seller and a popular title with anyone that has a pulse and a passing interest in Nintendo. People want to relive their youth, show their kids what they played when they were young, get the family together around the TV, get the girlfriend involved with a game she can play, have fun with friends during multiplayer, etc... etc... The stuff is all there to make it one of the top titles of the year and a seller with anyone.

Of course we won't see it like most will, but regardless of our mindset it is actually a pretty decent set for the price and content included in the package.

Mod_Man_Extreme, I will concede your points about the game's audience. However, you're deftly shooting down the same insinuation I was originally objecting to: that anyone was being "fooled" or that Nintendo was selling people the same game they already bought several times before. Thanks :)

Wasn't there a study that showed the age/gender groups that use the Wii the most were males under 16 and females over 35? I remember seeing that about a year ago.

In both cases, it's highly unlikely that they already own or have played SMAS.

Personally, even as a long-time gamer, I'll be getting SMAS. I let a friend borrow it back in elementary school and never got it back. (Of course, I have his Super Mario Kart, so whatever.)

Ah, well at least we weren't fooling anyone when selling it at my store.

The key to keeping a customer happy and not coming back in a postal rage is to just be honest about it. Even with that it's surprising how many people will buy the same stuff over and over and over again.

Even if a store was fooling people, it would be that store doing it, not Nintendo ;)

Anyway, the "fooling" language was retracted some time ago. I only still had an issue with it because someone else seemingly decided to keep defending it or some variation of the idea.
