The Red Star, first impressions. Awesome!!!
Wow, intuitive controls, awesome soundtrack, challenging and strategic gameplay, big huge explosions, simple combos, a beautiful marriage of two genres, a distinctly arcade feel, and, and, and...my god, it just rocks!
I sat down just to try the game. I didn't even put in a memory card. Next thing I knew I had played through like five levels and amassed a bunch of A ranks and one S rank. This game is just so easy to get into and addicting. I had some stuff to do tonight that got pushed back because of this darn game. It's so adrenaline pumping and fun. I had the volume cranked up while I was playing this.
I love how balanced and well thought out everything is. Every enemy has a certain specific attack and weakness. The mix of guns and melee, gives you offensive variety and options, and the health and shield meters are just downright generous. I love how your shields and guns can drain, but it doesn't happen every two seconds like that stupid power meter in Odin Sphere.
I can't comment on the story as I skipped it all for the action. I imagine it's decent given the source material. My only gripe with this game is the crappy targeting lock-on that is such a typical problem in today's games. The game seems clueless half the time about what you're trying to target. I learned to compensate for it though. You get used to it.

Yeah I just picked it up last week! It's really fun. A seemed like blend between Cannon Spike and Marvel Ultimate Alliance, but a little more old school. The variety of enemies and the different attack patterns you have to do keeps it interesting. I haven't played it all the way through yet, but I will soon.

I think ott0bot's MUA/Cannon Spike description is fairly accurate. Though what I know of Cannon Spike is only what I've seen in online videos.
I put some more time into the game again today. I swear, everything about this game just clicks for me. I think this a great example of how to make a modern arcade game. The large number of levels, upgrade system, ranking system, variety of challenges and unlockables make this appropriate for a console audience, but if still FEELS like an arcade game.
I also have to say that this game just feels very, very polished. Far more polished than any budget game has any right to be. It's just meticulously designed. And there is no skimping on the music or graphics despite being a budget title. The soundtrack in particular is just fantastic. Both adrenaline pumping and epic at the same time.
I honestly would have been more than happy to pay standard retail price for this game. It is that good.

no doubt! i got this sucker in the bargin bin at best buy!
The only thing that could use improvement is the lock on system, which you mentioned. If you hit any other button it disables and it can be quite annoying when you have multiple on-screen enemies.
Have you played it two player yet?
If you like this game you'll really like Cannon Spike. I picked it up on ebay for 15 bucks a few months ago, but it usually goes for alot more. Similar gameplay but you get to play as Capcom characters! Maybe you can get an iso an try it out.

YEEEEEEEESSSSSS!!!!!!!
I beat it today with Makita!! Last boss was a BITCH!! Beat him with a sliver of health left
This is pretty sweet. You unlock a third character, who seems to have a completely different play style from the one I was using. They definitely didn't make these characters clones of eachother. Also unlocked an arena mode. Plenty of replay in this game
Last few levels of story mode are intense. The designers throw everything at you, including consecutive boss fights with no health refill in between them and a couple real bullet hell scenarios. I swear I must have dodged a kitchen sink at one point
And guess what? They're STILL introducing new enemies even this close to the end of the game! Repetitive this game is not

Red Star is damn near perfect. I'm working on S ranks for all stages with all characters now. The only real irritating thing about the game is that there isn't an easy level restart option for when you screw up during an S rank run.otaku wrote:I've heard nothing but great things and liked what I played on xbox (demo) so this is on my list of stuff to pick up. Just picked up god hand so that is keeping me busy-sweet game that
