GOTY!

Post by AwesomeMonstar »

It's that time of year again, the season is passed us and the triple A's are all out, I think it's time we can star to make are end of the year judgments on what I think has been a surprisingly GOOD year for gaming.

The most surprising of which being that my favorite game this year was a 2d platformer.

God damn do I love Super Meat Boy. If anyone deserves a whole lot of attention next year it's team meat. An essentially new IP hitting the download scene by storm, and it most certainly deserves it. Perfect controls, fresh level design, great difficulty curve, wonderful visuals (though they could go beyond flash for the cut scenes... eh what the fuck I loved those too.) and let's not forget a particularly bad ass sound track. It's the full package, and a real testament to the power of fresh game design.

What are your thoughts? Everybody still hate halo here, or have you jaded poop heads finally been won over with Reach? Does anyone remember Mass Effect 2? What game was this years best?
Don't that just look oh so tasty?

Just about any game that most would consider for GOTY really, really fizzled with me. I wasn't impressed by hardly anything for 2010 - a really disappointing year.

I'd say Scott Pilgrim vs The World is my GOTY. Even with all the bugs, I had far more fun with that game than anything else people are considering for the title.

The only other big game I played a lot of this year was ModNation Racers - I honestly wouldn't consider it a GOTY, but it was a lot of fun. Still need to go back and play Bayonetta at some point.

i'm still loving new vegas, even though it was super glitchy and basically a fallout 3 expansion. playing that shit on hardcore is, well, hardcore and a real challenge.

Metal Gear Solid Peace Walker hands down. That game blew me away and it was a handheld title. Runner up would be Heavy Rain. Such a neat game and awesome story line. Mass Effect 2 would of been my choice if they would have kept the same battle formula as Mass Effect 1. The game turned into a TPS rather than a WRPG in my opinion.

New Super Mario bros Wii for me. I love that game. Dragon Quest IX comes in at a very close second.

I concur.

But overall, it has been a disappointing year.

The games I've finished or substantially played that came out this year are:

Retail Releases:
Aliens vs. Predator
Battlefield Bad Company 2
Bayonetta
Bioshock 2
Dante's Inferno
Deathsmiles
Dragon Age Origins: Awakening
God of War III
God of War: Ghost of Sparta
Halo: Reach
Madden 11
Metroid Other M
Metro 2033
NBA 2K11
Sin and Punishment 2
Super Mario Bros. Galaxy 2
Super Street Fighter IV

PSN/XBLA titles:
Gundemonium Recollection
Joe Danger
Scott Pilgrim
Soldner X-2
Tank Battles

...and a handful of iPhone games

I still plan to play:
Split/Second
3D Dot Game Heroes
Black Ops*
Need for Speed Hot Pursuit*
Kirby's Epic Yarn*
Starcraft 2*
NBA Jam*
*depends on what Santa brings

These are on my shelf but will have to wait until early next year:
Mass Effect 2
Just Cause 2
No More Heroes 2

.......so I feel like I need to wait until probably the end of January to declare a GOTY. At this point, my nod would go to either God of War II, Metro 2033, or perhaps Battlefield Bad Company 2. Downloadable GOTY would be Joe Danger. I really don't regret any of these experiences though, each game was fairly solid in its own right. Overall I thought this year was a good year for gaming, although last year was probably better...
