He says the rumor is 1000 were printed.

Fact of Myth?

How would he know? I doubt 1000 copies would be enough to offset the cost of making the carts, boxes and the cost of distribution. I got my copy back in the day and it wasn't all that hard to find, but then I was looking for it since I knew it was going to be the last 32x game issued. Still, I only had to look in two stores before I found it.

The only thing I can find which supports his claim is another auction that said something similar. It is possible that there were only 1,000 copies... but after artwork, cost of manufacturing, distribution, etc... 10,000 seems a more likely number.

I agree. I don't think it would have gone to retail if it was only 1,000. That's only 20 copies per state in the US. Highly unlikely. I would also be worth far more than it already is if that was the case.

DigitPress has some to say about it:

I believe it's possible it was truly printed in small numbers.

That review says "rumored to be only 1500". Rumored by whom? Unless the information came from the distributor of the game I don't give much creadence to such claims. Honestly, why would a company go to all the trouble of designing and publilshing a game unique to a particular console only to release it in such exceedingly low numbers? Maybe they got up front money from Sega to make it and publish and seeing that the console was officially dead at that time and decided to only publish the minimum amount to meet the contractual agreement, but it still doesn't make sense to not at least publish enough to recoop some of the costs associated with developing the game.

Well, if it was relatively certain they weren't going to get many buyers, they would have been stupid to have made more than they could sell. Then they'd have to write off not only dev time but manufacturing costs. It might have been one of those cases that they were far enough along and knew they wouldn't be able to sell enough but they decided to eat the cost of making a few just so they could see it released.
