PS3 turns it self off
PS3 turns it self off
I have a 40gig PS3, but it keeps turning it self off.
Whenever I boot up a game, it'll work for about 2-3 minutes when it turns it self off. I can leave it on for hours on the main menu though without problems, it's just when I put in a game.
It must be over heating, and the fan is rather loud.
Anyone know what I can try? It's out of warranty.

This happened to me twice. Its done. Send it to sony and they will fix the 40giggers for 99 bucks. give them a call. DONT OPEN IT!! I opened my on 80 gig and they said that the service center might not fix it cause it was opened even though it was out of warranty.

Re: PS3 turns it self off
Comparing it to a computer, sounds like overheating to me. Makes sense. Just idling on the menu doesn't really tax the system, once you load a game and it starts to really use resources and heat up. $100 is bullshit. If it IS just overheating, it would be easy enough to fix yourself. That is, assuming it just needs to be cleaned out.
I have a 40GB PS3 myself. If this were to happen to me, I would try and seek some internet help like you're doing and end up opening the system to see if it's clogged with dust. And then if so, clean it out. Then go from there. Paying $100 for Sony to fix it, I just wouldn't do that. I would rather put the $100 toward a new PS3 Slim or a used fat model that can play PS2 games.

Maybe a can of air? Might make it worse, depending where the dust settles inside. About the only thing you can do without breaking that seal.

Try this.
How to...
1. Turn off the console on the rear power button
2. Hold the eject button
3. Turn on console on the rear power button while still holding eject button
4. The vents will start rotating fast and should be really loud
5. After venting, you will hear 3 beeps and red light will blink
6. Than just turn off console on the rear power button and turn it off again and it will work.
Will make your PS3 fans work at 100%. Your fans might not be operating correctly. This should show.

Chu Chu Flamingo, isnt that the fan test? Or is it something else?
I got told the fan test can damage your GPU, and Sony confirmed it.

I have no idea if that is true, but from a troubleshooting standpoint what do you have to lose? Only have something to gain if it works, and if it doesn't then you're right where you started.emurozii wrote:Chu Chu Flamingo, isnt that the fan test? Or is it something else?

That is just Sony covering their asses. Why would they have a feature such as this if it could damage stuff. I could see if you ran it a few times constantlyemurozii wrote:Chu Chu Flamingo, isnt that the fan test? Or is it something else?
