But wait, they used another robot to fight that robot. Kind of like Terminator 2.

At least it wasn't a NES R.O.B.

Maybe we can make this the Over Reacting Security post. An augment of the TSA post. :D

I'll try to top your story JT.
A house was discovered with explosive chemicals. Deemed too dangerous to clean up, so the house will be burned to the ground. Right in the middle of a bunch of other homes in the nieghborhood, never mind the hazmat cloud.

Bonfire scheduled for next week. Bring your marshmallows and respirators.

Experts in everything from air pollution to fire barriers honed a complex plan Wednesday to burn the “bomb factory” home on the north edge of Escondido. While they don’t have a turnkey strategy to deal with a situation of this rarity, explosives experts said the developing blueprint seems solid.

“The plan is tight,” said Neal Langerman, a San Diego-based chemistry expert.

The three-bedroom home on Via Scott is so cluttered with dangerous chemicals — all of which terrorists have used to make explosives — that incinerating the home is the only way to safely remove everything, authorities said.

Experts predict the volatile chemicals will incinerate within the first 15 to 20 minutes of the blaze, which will be started by a remote detonator. Fire hoses filled with water will be placed nearby in case embers drift near other homes or property.

“Just like a campfire that is well-ventilated, you get a good rise of smoke,” Kard said. “That is really what you are hoping for — smoke that rises and then disperses. It’s one of those situations where the solution to pollution is dilution.”

Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger declared San Diego County a disaster area because of the explosives, and the house is to be destroyed next week.

To prepare for the destruction of the suspect's former rental home, crews Thursday began erecting a 16-foot-high metal-framed wall alongside it to the north. The barrier, to be covered with fire-resistant dry wall and flame- retardant gel, will protect a next-door neighbor's home, sheriff's spokeswoman Melissa Aquino said.

Workers also removed shrubs, trees and wooden fences that could catch fire during the burn, which will take place when climatic conditions -- notably wind patterns -- are as favorable as possible for this time of year.

Earlier this week, the county Air Pollution Control District installed a portable weather station on the roof of nearby Escondido Fire Department Fire Station 3 to get real-time weather patterns and "minimize surprises" on the day of the burn, Aquino said.

Hazardous-materials experts, meanwhile, have been strategizing on air monitoring to take place during the prescribed blaze and planning for the subsequent clean-up task.

Additionally, sheriff's officials are meeting with Escondido police and firefighting personnel to plan the evacuation of dozens of homes and traffic- control measures that will be necessary on the day of the controlled fire, Aquino said.

A stretch of nearby Interstate 15 also will be closed during the operation due to its proximity to the contaminated house.

The renter was making bombs unknown by the homeowner.
Government is not liable to compensate the homeowner.

The house got burned down this morning.

Q: Who pays for this and how much did it cost?

A: The cost of the entire operation has not yet been calculated. The sheer number of people that have been involved and the man-hours that have been spent studying the problem suggest the cost will eventually be in the millions, officials say.

Q: Will the homeowner be compensated for the loss?

A: Also not publicly known. The Sheriff’s Department has been in contact throughout the incident with the owner of the house and the owner’s insurance company, said county spokesman Michael Workman. “The law does not obligate the county to compensate the property owner because this home is being destroyed to protect the public health and safety,” Workman said.
