Really? I loved The Guardian Legend and this reminded me of it in many respects.

I'm only going by games I've owned, and didn't consider hand helds.

2600 - River Raid
NES - Life Force
SMS - Fantasy Zone
PCE - R-Type
PCE CD - Lords of Thunder
Genesis - Thunder Force III
Sega CD - Silpheed
SNES - Gradius III
3DO - ???
Neo Geo - Sonic Wings 2
PS1 - Einhander
Saturn - Radiant Silvergun
N64 - Star Soldier Vanishing Earth (again, what else is there?)
Dreamcast - Ikaruga
PS2 - Gradius V
PS3 - Soldner X 2

Yeah, they incorporated the RPG's elements at the expense of the core of the gameplay. So much potential!
Maybe now Nintendo will acknowledge Metroid has a fanbase?

Not sure it that counts... it's just a create your own shooter game based on the Vanishing Earth engine, as far as I know.

I loved Guardian Legend too. I don't think Sigma Star is a TERRIBLE game... but it's really low on my list of GBA shmups. I just think it was a good idea that doesn't actually play all that well.

Maybe Apidya for the Amiga?
Battle Squadron is also pretty good.

Funnily enough I just completed Iridion II this week.
