Shmup Pricing Sweet Spot.

Post by gennss »

One of the biggest complaints about Radiant Silvergun is that it's pricing is extremely high for what it is. Though it's average pricing has dropped from its 200+ high point, it is still considered, at least by me, very expensive.

I find that when I buy a shmup I end up paying an average of 60-80. Which is probably why I don't have as many anymore. (I have I believe 6). I also find the irresistible price for me for a good game is 10-20 usd, stg/shmups is the exception which I'm willing to pay more for.

I also noted that platform and region made an effect on what I'm willing to pay. Example, I wouldn't really pay more than 25ish for a GameCube game, but Dreamcast 40+ is normal. The same applies to local vs import.

What is the sweet spot for a game for you?

Well Recca Pure cost me about $15 to make and the last ones I bought before that was Ikaruga (GC) for like $30 and Rez (PS2, before it became popular) for about $15.

edit: Actually Shikigami 2 for $10 new and Shikigami 3 for $20 new too.

For a USA shmup I am willing to drop $10-$30
For a Import shmup I am willing to drop $30-100

I guess it all depends on the rarity of the game.

...and my interest.

I usually "preview" (pirate) a pricey shmup (over $100) first to get a sense of if I'd like to buy it or not. Usually the answer is yes, though. :D

Sometimes I don't preview, at least if I know I can just resell and break even. Sometimes I'm disappointed, other times I am pleasantly surprised.

It all depends on the game - for a new Asian release, it's pretty much certain that I'll be paying £50-£70, depending on the content of the Limited Edition. But for older, rarer games, I generally have a rule that I won't go over £100 - this is why I don't own Harmful Park, as much as I'd like to. I've broke this a couple of times though, most notably for Psychic Killer Taromaru.

I think I have played every shmup worth owning LOL. Most of the time I am just buying back stuff I had at one point. I have been a day 1 Shmup buyer since the mid 90's. And the best part of that is not paying over retail!

When I did the conversion, 100£ is a lot of money, i got radiant silvergun for less than that. You like your shmups eh?
