And if you have some runner's up, lemme know too...

And if there's ones to avoid, please clue me in as well :)

From what I gather Hori takes the cake for 3rd party controllers on just about any system.

I have a Makopad which works well (essentially a Superpad but clear), but doesn't get the sensitivity quite right for some games, and my thumb tends to slip off of that gigantic stick. Kind of awkward but you get used to it.

My vote would have to go towards the classic controller with a replacement third party joystick from the nintendo repair shop (if this counts as a 'third party controller'). The things are brand new but aren't reproductions - they are more like gamecube joysticks and mine is holding up just fine so far.

Unfortunately I haven't had the pleasure of trying a hori mini pad.

Nothing comes close to the Hori Mini. It is even (arguably) better than the 1st party controller.

The only downside to the hori is that it is not as good for FPS titles. The sticks throw is different and it makes the "precision" of aiming way off.

My favorite not yet mentioned is the Arcade shark:

Sure there are not alot of fighters or beatemups on the console, but it is a great arcade stick and does something very few stick makers did until this generation - it can be used for the analog OR the dpad. I havent used one in a few years but if I ever get ahold of a couple of them, itll be Rakuga Kids time at Acks house

wow, thats a cool controller. Id like to try one. there might not be many fighters on the n64 itself, but a usb N64 adapter would be quite awesome to have with this.
