I hear this same crap justifying government grants for pick your wasteful program. "We had to buy that new line of eco friendly city buses, the money wasn't authorized to be used elsewhere." Change the stupid policy and quit wasting money!

Oh and for the record, that point would be valid if this was taxpayer money. It isn't. It's a private donation.

No, the guy is totally in his right to donate his money to whatever he wants. He's still an asshole.

It's disgusting watching sports programs literally drain money from academic programs at schools. AND FOR WHAT? A ton of jocks receiving shoddy educations themselves? Putting their academic, financial, and physical futures at risk for a 1% chance of making it to the professional leagues?

College sports, especially football, is some sick form of apartheid. These kids academic futures are literally held hostage by a university that either loses money on a sports program that shouldn't exist or rakes it in, sharing fuck all with the athletes while asking the student athletes to assume all the risk.

Last paragraph should encourage another round of protests from the students who have tuition fees raised yet again.

I don't know the specific situation at SDSU, but money going to the football program isn't usually money that would have otherwise gone towards keeping tuition low.

that's really silly logic, imo. if a grant is given by the government for a specific use, and the state uses it for that use, why is that such crap? would you rather they not use the money at all?

it's unrealistic to expect city/state government to attempt to change policies (handed down by the federal gov't, no less) just so they can use money elsewhere that was designated for a specific use.

this is all also assuming that any politicians would actually want to "do the right thing" and use money where it needs to go in the first place, so yeah. probably just contradicted myself here.

There is a difference between spending money for one's hobbies and donating an obscene amount of money just to keep a football coach at a mediocre college program...
