S-video...and COMPONENT modded NES 001?!

Post by Satoshi_Matrix »

I saw something truly crazy

This guy has modded an NES Toaster to output not only S-video, but also friggin' component video!

He does it by using a Play-Choice 10 PPU and then built a converter board. This is something I very much want to buy.

Unfortunately the dude hasn't responded to my messages and his page seems rather dead.

I'm asking around every forum I can think of, so sorry if nobody here could do so...but just in case...does anyone here have the technical skill to build such a system? What would be the overall cost of such a project? I'm guessing this would be rather pricey.

He doesn't mention it in his video, but what would be the quality/resolution of NES games in component? Even at 480p, that's still rather incredible.

Anyway, let me know what you guys think.

Converting RGB to Component is rather trivial. Combine and amplify the channels and outpout. all together with a nice board madeup will cost at most $20. I for one would charge more plus labor to install said mod though.

As for the PPU swap. I have no idea what the cost is on that. Doesn't interest me in the least.

Very clean mod :)

Just on a side note, the japanese Sharp Famicom Titler has s-video out on it and looks absolutely incredible. It's the only nes/famicom system to come standard with s-video output.

I also want this mod done, but the signal is still gonna be 240p. Luckily for me, my upscaler can just line double that to 480p then to 1080p. If anyone could do it, I would totally be interested in it like Satoshi_Matrix

I've been meaning to buy a Twin Famicom, never knew they released this model. I've been looking up on ebay and have never found one.

Really sucks NES only supports composite, RGB with a expensive Play choice 10 chip. I guess Sega does what nintendont (does RGB)

Do you have a schematic?

I don't know how trivial the signal conversion is. I've been looking into converting RGB Scart to component and found a few products recommended by message board users. I decided to get this one both for it's price and the number of reported success stories.

BTW, with this board you could have VGA output.

There's always a ton of them on eBay, mostly from Japan. Finding one to buy in the States, now that's a horse of a different color.

Might get flamed for this, but I really don't see the point of S-Video or component on an 8-bit console. 16-bit, that's a different story.

Sorry, when I meant for twin famicom, I meant the twin famicom titler. The other ones are relatively easy to find on ebay and usually cost $180.

As far as composite on 8 bit stuff like NES, quality is quality. I find the NES produces a lot of artifacts with composite. It can be remedied with a comb filter, but not all the time.

If anyone in this thread is interested, I have a SHARP Twin Famicom for sale, and I'm in Ontario Canada and will ship anywhere. Add to that, I'm asking much less than you'd find on ebay at just $100 vs the $160-300 you'll see on there. And mine works.

Haha I would tend to agree, until I saw the Titler in person (bought one haha). It is a remarkable difference and looks absolutely wonderful up close.
