Home Light Guns vs Arcade Light Guns

Post by fvgazi »

Is there a hardware difference that makes the home light guns so crappy? Maybe it's just me, but I've always felt that gun con and all the lot are not nearly as good as any of the guns I've played in the arcade (House of the dead , time crisis, etc.) I know the monitor plays a large part in how well the guns work, but I'm not that savvy on picture quality and television stats.

I've read the post about the saturn gun to add in a switch to make the response faster. I feel a huge urge to play house of the dead or biohazard gun survivor, but I have no light guns. I figured I would mod them if I picked up a few.

Hardware wise the guns are pretty similar. Of course the hardware is cheaper and the plastic lighter on home versions. The main reason the home versions suck in many cases is the resolution and response of CRT tv's versus that of arcade monitors. The guns are generally calibrated to the screen by a pro and then all the specific resolutions that give the best response are set as defaults in arcades. Your tv is probably not optimized for light gunning and sometimes based on positioning of the tv in a room there is a decent amount of interference that a arcade would not have due to lack of light and arcade blocking.

Now just time to find some light guns. The last one I bought for $1 was DOA.

Will this work with any light guns? Like the superscope and menacer?

The leaf switch is a definite improvement. It won't affect the gun sensor response though. I think the real issue is how well the gun sensor picks up on the non-HD CRT screen. Dimly lit room and adjust of brightness and contrast on the TV helps.
