We've all went on genre binges, but I doubt any one on this forum only has 1 genre of games for an entire system.

I don't think I've ever gone on a single genre binge, honestly. Maybe single game, even though that may classify as single genre.

I think I could play shmups and fighters til I die, but variety is important because you never know what game may surprise you

Slightly off-tangent, but I realized that retro games are much more conducive to playing several games within the same time period than modern games. I mean, it is perfectly possible to finish 3 nes games in a day (provided that you're actually good enough to finish them). The number increases even further if you're just trying out games.

Whereas modern games really require time investment, from installations, to loading screeens, to cutscene intros, etc. You can't possibly even finish one single player game in a day. Even if you're not intent on finishing, a lot of games take an hour before you get a taste of what it offers.

I was about to agree with the topic title, untill i looked at my shelf. I recently sold pretty much every game i owned but didnt play and now i realise that 90% of my collection is shmups and or FPS. However as much as i can easily play these for hours on end, i need the occasional bit of soul calibur or Jak and Daxter to mix things up. Also i just realised i never completed Secret of Evermore(and it wont sell). Might have to try that one again.

It's definitely easy to acquire mostly FPS for some of the newer consoles. I have 26 PS2 games, 10 of them are FPS. I actually had a few more but I sold some shitty ones (Medal of Honor European Assault, Call of Duty, maybe some others). I have 13 Wii games and 5 of them are FPS. Again, I use to have more FPS but I sold some shitty ones (CoD3, MoH Heroes 2).

Out of the 15 or so physical PC games I've bought, only 2 of them aren't FPS. I guess that's a different story though.

Yeah tell me about it. All the college kids i go to school with will not shut up about it. Most of them think i have no life for indulging in retro games, RPG's, and tabletop roll playings games. Yet they are the one's sitting and playing online with 12 year old screaming in their mics on a shitty game all day. Or playing a plastic guitar all day.

My Nintendo 64 collection is currently composed of about 85% fighting games. The rest are classics of the console. But then, I tend to collect in genre-based clumps, which is how my SNES collection started expanding from the 10 games I owned.

I don't know about you guys, but I've gone on genre binges before. From about July 2009 to June 2010, I played quite a few FPS, but that's partly because I had spent a year before hankering to play some FPS and unable to do so beyond playing a couple of games I had already beaten multiple times, so my appetite for them took quite a bit to glut. Most of them were from the last decade, but they were a smattering from different years. I enjoyed the experience though, jumping from an FPS released in 2000 to one released in 2007 and seeing how the gameplay had changed. It's like an interactive history lesson in which I get to turn large amounts of opposition into piles of chunky red goo. Knowledge is power, I suppose.

Look, if your friend likes only the most recent FPS and Guitar Hero release, then yes he's missing out, but he's ultimately just a tourist anyway with likely only a superficial interest in the medium. It's like someone who says they're really into movies but only watches the latest releases. It's really just a surface interest, nothing more. And yes, companies will cater to that, because there are far more people with only a superficial interest in the medium, so that's where they'll choose to make their money, just like Hollywood. After all, why else does Michael Bay get to keep making movies?

Hell, my girlfriend and I were having a discussion on pop music earlier today, and something she said about it translates well to video games: it's not necessarily about the music or the game, it's purely about the image. That's all.
