Just kidding, I know what you mean. But at the same time, I'm kinda not. If they like those types of games over and over, fine. It's the attitude that person has about playing the game that is or isn't good. People can play the same sports for years and be happy, or they can be a jerk and play rough and whine when they lose.
How can a person possibly play the same genre non-stop?

Man, how can sports people just play the same damn games year after year. Basketball, baseball, football. They all involve moving a ball, just 2 of them into a goal and making the other go far away.

I think I'm just going to say "screw the backlog" I have and devote myself to nothing but hidden objects mysteries and match 3 puzzles for the rest of my life.

I guess its the same situation as someone who only reads certain types of books or listens to a specific genre of music. That's a pretty shitty backlog (your friend, not you) of games. I love my fair share of FPS, but i've been able to dabble into other genres by just being a retro and current-gen gamer.
I would just let your friend bask in the glory of calling himself a hardcore gamer. Judging by your Minor Threat avatar, I think you know a thing or two a posers in punk. Same thing, let the real ones be the real ones, the posers will eventually fade into a new fad.

I look at all the drones buying the newest FPS while Black OPs is still fresh. Crap, how many sixty dollar FPS games does one need? In fairness as a last gen gamer, I love PS2 FPS Black. I probably would have bought a PS2 Black 2 to enjoy new levels.JordanPlayer wrote:I cannot stand this type of "gamer". I had someone ask if I had gotten CoD: Black Ops and I promptly replied no... and if I did it would have been for PC due to mouse + keyboard being better. He gave me an amazed look and asked how I could call myself a gamer; felt like busting that kid upside the head for not knowing what a real gamer is and being a poser. These kids need to learn a lesson and go play some great multiplayer FPS games such as Unreal Tournament, Quake, etc before thinking that the latest CoD is the shitZiggy587 wrote:Seems like your friend is just one of those generic 360 kids. Guitar Hero and Call of Duty. That's all the 360 is good for. Trade in the last CoD for the new one that came out, no one is playing the old one anymore. Gotta stay up late to rank up.
Ah, the good old Tony Hawk days of unlimited user made maps. Used to be a joy to discover a new online homebrew level without having to break out the ATM card again and again.

But then there are people who play nothing but shmups. They own the shit out of some seriously hard games, you can't not be impressed. They're certainly not any less of a gamer for sticking to one genre.

Re: How can a person possibly play the same genre non-stop?
It all depends on the person. It sounds like your friend hasn't given other games a chance, but it's really all preference. Also, there is a lot of variation in each genre. Though, I can't say I see much innovation in the Sports, FPS, or Rhythm games that your friend seems to enjoy.

Re: How can a person possibly play the same genre non-stop?
I could definitively just play a specific genre and be happy. But I'm happier playing several. Some genres I really like but wouldn'be happy just playing that genre though.
Same favorite genres I could play include action-RPGs of the Diablo type, western-style RPGs, Turn-based strategy, either stuff like Tactical or Strategy RPGs or stuff like Civilization.
Apparently I really like playing games that give me a sense of progression! I also like eastern-style RPGs, but I wouldn't be happy playing just that as I quickly get tired with random encounters (one would think they would have quickly evolved to where a majority of them would NOT have them, but to me it appears that there are few gems like that).

You had a Saturn and Mega Drive when you were little and played NiGHTS and Thunder Force IV on them? That is awesome.Original_Name wrote:@Breetai -- Yeah, the games I tried in my youth were similarly varied... NiGHTS into Dreams, Half-Life, Shenmue, Final Fantasy VII, Ecco the Dolphin, Daytona USA, Gran Turismo, Sonic the Hedgehog, Final Fantasy Tactics, Thunder Force IV, Panzer Dragoon Zwei, Shinobi III, Seaman, Toy Commander, Virtual ON, The Typing of the Dead, Jet Set Radio, Crazy Taxi, PaRappa the Rapper, Xenogears, Metal Gear Solid, Resident Evil: Code Veronica, Street Fighter Alpha 2, Chu Chu Rocket!, Virtua Fighter, ET CETERA... all over the place. When I bought Sonic Spinball, for instance, it wasn't 'cause Sonic was on the cover, it was because I'd never played a pinball video game before and it seemed interesting. I almost said that may be in part because back then the consoles were more oriented around such diversity, so my buying habits were just a product of that -- but then again, I didn't see many modern FPS nuts trying out Halo Wars just 'cause it seemed different and interesting. I wonder if a game like Metal Gear Solid were just now coming out for the first time today if people would pay much attention to it?
Metal Gear Solid was huge because it was made by Konami and pushed by the magazines at the time. It was very heavily advertised. If it came out today it would still do awesome for those reasons.

Yeah, I had a Genesis/Mega Drive and a Saturn and my father had a PlayStation and a PC. We would buy games mostly for our own systems, but we would recommend games to eachother often. I'll admit that I didn't pick out Thunder Force IV myself -- my dad pretty much bought that and Gunstar Heroes and said "PLAY THESE WITH ME ON YOUR GENESIS," (So maybe that's cheating to include those, haha -- then again, I did the same thing with Final Fantasy Tactics, Xenogears, and PaRappa the Rapper on his PlayStation). We didn't even know about the options menu... when we ("we" meaning my dad... we would trade between deaths, but he got 90% of the progress) finally beat the first four levels on the default settings, we thought we'd beaten the game.Breetai wrote:You had a Saturn and Mega Drive when you were little and played NiGHTS and Thunder Force IV on them? Anyway, yeah, I did grow up with TFIV (although the cart reads "Lightening Force"... blech)... that's probably the most surprisingly obscure game in that list. And NiGHTS came on a demo disc with my Saturn, and once I played it I HAD to have the full game... best gameplay ever in my personal opinion.
Perhaps Metal Gear Solid might catch on like it did back then... Little Big Planet, Mirror's Edge, and Heavy Rain all sold well in recent years even though they were doing things that were relatively out of the norm. At the same time, I think it would probably "undersell" its expectations just like the aforementioned.

Re: How can a person possibly play the same genre non-stop?
Oh, and to clarify to everyone else, I wasn't trying to say that people who only play or could only play a single genre are annoying or wrong, I'm just saying I'm surprised it could hold someone's attention for so long, no matter what they're playing for. The sports comparison is very valid... I'd say that if a person is just watching one sport it's a bit different since that's just one type of visual entertainment and the person would presumably engage in others such as a sitcom or a movie over the course of the week. As far as playing it, though, and it not being a job to them in any sense, I think you're right. I know middle-aged guys who go out and play football every week just 'cause, and I never questioned it like I did with my friend and his two-tone collection of video games.
As far as my friend, even though he's great as a friend, he's incredibly competitive and dominating in most facets of his life... I guess that's the only thing he really gets out of gaming. What a shame... it's probably better for me if he doesn't branch out into "my territory" then since he'll probably carry that mentality to every genre... I don't want to play any 0-83 matches of The Typing of the Dead with him.
I know that I, for one, would be bored out of my mind experience the same general thing over and over... having the experiences just bleed into one another like that seems like hell to me. My cranial juices just squirt in different ways and places than his do, I guess.
