Is it true that backed up games will ruin the gd-rom?

I just read a discussion about people talking about how backed up games can and can not mess up your gd-rom. One dude said its because the back ups make the drive spin faster while the other guy says that does not happen. is this true?

Your laser will eventually die no matter how well you take care of it and regardless if you use originals, backups or music cds.

It can cause extra wear and tear, some games more than others (Headhunter and Skies of Arcadia are especially bad).

Yeah it's to do with where the data is placed on the disk and how the motor seeks. It's not the laser that wears out, it's actually the motor that moved the laser from the center outwards and back again. When this wears out it mis-aligns the laser to the data, so you get read errors, only way to fix it is get a replacement gd-rom unit.

But eventually playing only originals will still break it after a long while. Thats the problem with these 'moving part' consoles. They only last as long as the sum of it's parts. When one bit wears out, the rest inevitably fails unfortunately.
