So I've Google'd the issue and found a lot of people have had this same problem, some described it identical to myself.
My Wii was super quiet when I got it (brand new, launch model). I actually made a self note of it, I was pleased that it wasn't loud. The Wii never moved or anything, just sits there. Never been dropped or anything like that. So after a period of not using it, I turn it on one day and the disc drive is SUPER loud. When you're doing something that uses the disc (in game, Wii menu) it's really loud. Even when it's not loading anything, you can hear it spinning. It can be very annoying at times, especially when I have my TV turned down low, because if you're playing a Wii or GCN game you can always hear it. The disc never stops spinning, so you just hear a loud noise coming from the console the entire time.
So I'm just kinda curious. Any one else have this happen to them? Did you do anything about it? I've read a couple "fixes" for the issue. Basically you just open the console up and then play with stuff until you can get it quiet. Any one try this? It's annoying me, and I'm thinking about opening it up, but I just don't feel like it. Not that I'm lazy, I just don't wanna go through the hassle of opening it up and tinkering with it if the end result isn't a quiet Wii.
edit: This is not my video, but this is exactly what my Wii sounds like...

The way you describe it is the same way for me. At first, it was quiet and then after getting around 50 hours put into it, it started to become loud. I'm curious as well on how it could be quiet as well. Perhaps it's the game?

Maybe the lens is dirty and having a hard time reading disk. Might just need a lens cleaning.

Wow, I never thought of that. I'm now probably going to buy a lens cleaner now

mine is very loud. Sometimes it makes this clicking sound when its booting up the menu. Kinda like the eye is getting stuck. On top of that it took forever to load donkey kong country returns the first time. I was looking at a black screen for 10 mins. Weird.

Well it's not any one game, since it happens with all games. I'm pretty sure it's not dirty, but I can rule that out anyway. Like I said, it's not just loud when loading from the disc, the entire drive is loud. Just the disc spinning (not loading anything) is loud.
You talking about the disc with the little brushes on it? You can't put that into the Wii because of the type of drive that it is. You could put that in a PS1 or Dreamcast, but not a Wii or PS3.
I'm pretty positive it isn't dirty anyway, at least, not my Wii.
Mine doesn't make any clicking sounds, or any strange sounds for that mater. Just the disc spinning is very loud. That's about it, really. I don't have any problems loading games or anything like that.

Nintendo makes its own brand of lens cleaner.

By the way mine suffers the same problem but it doesn't do it all the time.

Re: Loud Wii drive - Any one else?
Ah, I didn't even know that's available. Good to know.
But I'm sure MY Wii isn't dirty. From what I've read on the matter, it seems this just happens over time. From what I've gathered, I'm guessing the vibrations from drive eventually rattle it to a point where it's unbalanced or something, making loud noises.
But to stress the point again, I have a disc in the Wii right now and I'm just on the channel menu. The disc is spinning, not loading, and still very loud.
