Getting screenshots for this review, I came to realize I really love the font used in the "get weapon" screen of Megaman 4. I want to use it in a new banner for my blog.

Since I'm going to be updating the banner anyway, do you guys have any suggestions for what I should change the name to? I don't think the current name quite fits, but I can't think of anything that I like better.

I was afraid of this review. Megaman 4 is the game that I really cut my teeth on as a kid - and my personal favorite of the original 6 NES titles. And so it's hard for me to objectively read someone else's criticism. Overall, I think you did a tremendous job and I applaud the scope of your review.

I can get behind a lot of your statements. Yes, it IS too easy. Yes, too many of the weapons are next to useless (though the acid rain is a great screen clearer for new players).

But one thing you said kinda sticks in my craw and I hope you'll revisit this assessment when you review Megaman 5 and 6: Namely that Megaman 4 is "By and large the most forgettable of the six games on the NES."

I just can't agree with that. The ending alone makes the game stand out so clearly in my mind, especially the extended Protoman theme and the first in-game picture of the entire 'Rockman family'. Also, the attention to story telling and continuity, though antiquated by today's standards, were so instrumental in making me care about the franchise as a series. The previous games were just good games. This game started the larger storyline. It had foreshadowing, dialogue, and even a little character development. Lastly, in terms of level design and music, the game stands up way better (IMO) than the last two NES titles.

But I'm rambling. I just hope you revisit that opinion when you play through Megaman 5 and 6 for your review.
Maybe now Nintendo will acknowledge Metroid has a fanbase?

Mission accomplished.

In all seriousness though, thank you for your kind words. Megaman 4 seems to receive much more shit than it actually deserves. It might very well be the weakest of the six NES games, but it still towers far over most other NES games.

When I said Megaman 4 is "by and large the most forgettable of the six games on the NES." I wasn't talking about any specific moment, rather the game as a whole. More of a statement that if a gun were placed to my head and asked to get rid of one Megaman game from the NES years, 4 would be the unfortunate sacrifice for me. I know a lot of people would point immediately to the first game, but even with it's difficulty, Megaman 1 is in my view a slightly better game than 4.

That said, I still really like Megaman 4 and it seems to be a popular game for rom hackers. Have you played through Rockman 4 Gadget Master or Rockman 4 Sparking to Hero? Both are excellent reuses of Megaman 4 and correct much of the blandness I feel Megaman 4 had in comparison to the earlier entries.

I can't help but have kind words. I'm looking forward to installments 5 and 6 - to see what made those two more memorable to you, overall. Having someone who disagrees with you eagerly await your next reviews is the mark of a good reviewer.

A solid review; it wasn't the best in the classic series by any means, but it acted as a good testing ground for future Mega Man games.

excellent review. 4 is one of my faves in the series (probably my third fave - 5 being second fave and 6 being my overall fave). it might be a bit easier, but you nailed it about the cool weapons, great GREAT music, and just overall fun.

i would argue that dust man is awesome though! stupid name, but damn if he doesn't look cool! and we all know the rain flush isn't useless, you can use it to KILL dr. wily!
