Niode summed it up my feelings pretty well. It doesn't feel like you're racing a car at all, it's exceedingly clear that it's a simulation. That was fine in the first 2 GT games, ok in the 3rd, questionable in the 4th, and now I'm just confused about it. Apparently they can spend years tweaking how the vehicles move on the rod, but barely even consider what happens when they run into something. That's not just an oversight imo, it's a massive fuck up.
I think likely what happened was the GT team has be left to their own devices with so little oversight for so long that they lost the big picture on what they were making. I guess it's sorta how I feel about all the newer Final Fantasy games, the people that made them are clearly very talented, but the end result just isn't that great.
I wouldn't call it a massive fuckup, it's just a minor disappointment in my book.. To me it could be easily correctable, but I'm sure they just want to follow the same formula from the previous games..

Sadly I think Yamauchi has fallen ill of the Sony hype machine, even Polyphony, Sony's most prolific hardware-juice-squeezer can't make GT5 look much better than the 1 year old Forza 3. Disappointing, especially if we are to believe the whole 'PS3 is much more powerful than 360' argument. This should have been the clincher. This should have been the game that justified all the fanboys that went out and bought the machine on day one, with it's ridiculous price tag. "it's much more powerful than the 360, it has to be, it cost me twice as much!". Those dreams have been shattered with the release of GT5. Personally, I'm disappointed, I expected, of all people, Polyphony Digital would be the guys to achieve the holy grail. Sadly the reality hits that the PS3 really is no more powerful than it's main competitor in real-world scenarios.

Overall, Polyphony appear to have delivered a game that, while possibly undeservedly, will sell by the bucket load and be a major system seller for Sony. It's just such a shame that the game still feels 17 years old.
Way to turn this into a fanboy argument bro... While the shadows and trees may look amateurish, everything else is fine.. Quit whining.. You make it sound like this game is total trash.. I agree that there are some disappointing aspects of the game, but I think they are minimal as well.. I really think the AI has improved, you can't just bang off other cars for your own benefit because you'll spin out almost instantly.. The replay value is still there, and I think if they wanted to, they could patch the flaws of the game.. I just think the negative aspects are minimal to the overall gameplay..

You read what you want to read dude. I'm serious. You should go back and read my comment again. There is no fanboy argument in there. Hell, I've been EXTREMELY sympathetic for the PS3 side of things, I was very conscious about not turning this into an argument, but you have to factor in GT5s rivals, you can't just put your fingers in your ears and pretend that GT5 is the only gear-head driving sim out there. FYI I do actually own two PS3s if you haven't noticed... I'm not a fanboy, far from it. You're coming off as a butt-hurt fanboy justifying the issues with the game. Why should we cut Yamauchi slack? The game was in development for over 5 years possibly longer.

I'll repeat it again, read my comment, word for word. Absorb what I have said, then form a cohesive counter-argument rather than putting words in my mouth.

I'm not a fanboy... But even if you were trying to be generous, it's pretty obvious who you were siding with when I read your post.. You can try to hide the fact that you like Microsoft more, but from your many posts including this one, it's clear you are not a fan of Sony at all which is fine I suppose.. And personally there are better racing sims out there than either GT5 or FM 3.... Take games like Race 07, GTR2 or rFactor for the PC... They have realistic damage and full on driving simulation.. I still think GT5 is better than FM 3, but that isn't saying much IMO.. If I'm a fanboy at all it's for PC... Second would probably be Nintendo at this point followed by Sony.. I just think you can constructively criticize this game without mentioning other games or Xbox.. GT5 really didn't make the game up their lofty standards considering they developed the game for 4-6 years... It really has nothing to do with other games...

I just still find it hard to believe that you aren't arguing against Sony.. You mention sony "fanboys" and then you talk about the power of ps3 vs 360.. How could someone not take this as another 360 vs PS3?

I'm starting to think the graphics suffered due to amount of content in the game... Having a 8 gb install is simply ridiculous.. There are definitely flaws with this one, but I don't think they warrant totally trashing the game either.. I noticed that the odd number games 1-3-5 are the ones that first test out the hardware.. I think 6 will be much improved if it's ever released LOL!!! The PS3 needs more memory IMO..

Of course it does, if a game like Uncharted 2 is lauded purely because there was no other game like that at the time then why can't you criticise because of the opposite? Like I said, it makes no sense to blindly put your fingers in your ears and go 'lalalala I love GT' and ignore the fact that there are (arguably) better racing games out there, not just FM but Grid/Dirt 2 and the simbin GTR games. I'm not saying GT5 is a bad game, I'm saying that it's disapointing.

I really don't think FM or Grid is better than GT5, but I agree with you on GTR.. I think we need to look at the bigger picture that the console racers need to step it up, because the PC sim racers are better.. But even with that, you expect perfection with GT and you didn't get it, so in that respect I agree that's disappointing, but it's still a good game and perhaps the best console racer(not really saying that much these days though)..

Edit: I also need to mention that Hot Pursuit might get the award for racing game of the year, which would be pretty sad..(I know an arcade racer but still)

I'm thinking Miyamoto releases a mario related sim racer and it dominates the competition.. Seems to work with most other genre's so far.. He needs to release a great FPS as well!!! :P

Dude, you know there's an edit button. :P

I haven't played GT5 and don't plan to. I remember playing GT5 Prologue after my cousin got it and we agreed that the game was pretty underwhelming. If this was anything like that then I really feel sorry for all the people who bought PS3s for this game.
