Niode, I too had tried CitiesXL 2009 and didn't like it.

But CitiesXL 2011 is really really good. It has the trading aspect of 2009, but between the cities you have now. It has many many structures, with many unique ones if you like playing with details. The game's classes aren't as complex as in CityLife, and also not a pain anymore (in city life they didn't like living next to someone of lower/higher class than them).

You should really try it out. I love it. Best city building game out there. Much better than City Life 2008 and SimCity 4

What exactly counts as modern?

For instance, I really enjoy Titan Quest, but it saw release in 2006 (and its expansion Immortal Throne in 2007). It's a fun Diablo clone set in Greece, Egypt, and straight across the Asian continent into China which combines the ancient religious beliefs and mythologies from the three areas.

Gas Powered Games' Demigod is decent in my opinion, but I have some friends that absolutely love it. If you like RTS/RPG hybrids that are quick on the action with a heavy multiplayer focus, it's one to check out.

The S.T.A.L.K.E.R. trilogy of FPS is great and well worth checking out for anybody who hasn't tried playing them. While I agree that Clear Sky is my least favorite, I still feel all three were solid experiences.

The Penumbra trilogy was quite fun for me, though I believe you've already played them J T. A lot of folks find these horror adventure titles really scary, so for anyone who hasn't played them, consider this your warning. And for those of you who have finished and want something even scarier, check out Amnesia: The Dark Descent.

As for civilization building games, I enjoyed Galactic Civilizations II back when I played it upon first release in 2006. I haven't played the expansions, which were released in 2007 and 2008. It's a turn-based game of galactic conquest with a lot of options: my alien race were industrious mutant squirrels. If you want more of an RTS feel, Sins of a Solar Empire is quite popular with my friends, but I don't really care much for it myself. I don't really like RTS games all that much.

Oh, and there's always Alien Swarm, the top-down shooter that Valve put out for free on Steam. I know you check out Steam a lot, so I'm sure you've seen the wealth of mods and various side games put out on there.

But that's only relatively recent stuff that I know don't have any ports. There are quite a few games that I feel play better on PC, but that comes down to personal taste. There's also quite a bit of stuff I'm looking forward to, but we'll have to wait and see if games like Black Mesa Source ever actually come out.

I know you meant games - so I'm sort of cheating here - but I really want to mention that the real "killer applications" for PCs (including Macs in here) are the respective Operating systems and the programs that come with them (browser, video playback etc.). The dedicated keyboard and mouse that are often mentioned as a big advantage in FPS are even bigger for browsing and whatever else people do on their OSs as well.

Not surprisingly, not many people use their consoles for browsing and watching videos, even though it is possible at least to some extent. Even forgetting about dedicated work PCs, all these people have one (or more) PC they use at home nowadays even if they don't even game on them, often cost more than the consoles as well. That is how good the "exclusive killer apps" are in selling the hardware :)

Sorry for the off-topic post but I think it was important to make a note of this.

Ivo.

Starcraft 2, STALKER series, Torchlight, Trackmania (yes I know there are Wii and DS ports, but neither can be compared to the PC release), Kings Bounty series (Platinum edition can be had for under $10 today via a Steam sale!)
