Trying to find out the name of an arcade beat-em-up in 3D

Post by Ivo »

I remember playing this game a handful of times, but the details are a bit scarce. Hopefully it won't be too hard to guess as not many of these games were released in the arcade at that period.

I must have played it in 2000, 2001 or 2002. The game was a beat-em up in 3D. It wasn't just side-scrolling with 3D graphics. The graphic quality must have been around Dreamcast level 3D I think.
It had selectable characters with differing characteristics - i.e. not just clones of each other. I think it had at least 3, but it may have had 4 characters (it may have had 2, but I really think it had more than 2). I remember there was some kind of special move, limited in number but IIRC replenished when you lost either a life or a credit, and I vaguely remember thinking while fighting the 1st boss that it was a good time to use it when he grabbed you as that actually avoided the incoming damage.

Almost. Die Hard Arcade was the U.S. version of Dynamite Deka. Dynamite Cop was the U.S. version of Dynamite Deka 2, so it's sort of the sequel to Die Hard Arcade. If the game had Dreamcast level graphics, it's probably Dynamite Cop.

It could also be Spike Out. I think a version of that came out for xbox. It had a big sonic statue in one of the levels.

EDIT: It was definitively this one :)

The net is a bit sparse on screenshots, but the special move icon and graphic style seems recognizable. I'll have a look on youtube when I get to a flash enabled browser and confirm.

If it is this one, was the original ported to any consoles (I see a "Battle street" on the Xbox but it seems to be a sequel of sorts).

As soon as you said 2001 3D beat em up I instantly thought of Spikers Battle. There was a follow up called Battle Street you're right. The original was never ported though. It did run on Naomi which has been emulated fairly well, so you could always get your fix that way if you have a powerful enough system to handle it.

Yep, any dual core PC with a passable GPU ought to do the trick. It might be confusing to get the ROM to work with any of the three main emulators (Demul, Makaron and nullDC) but the sets are on underground-gamer if you're willing to trade ratio for convenience.
