Cell shaded games like Dark Cloud 2, Legend Of Zelda Wind Waker and Okami are old games but still look & play fantastic today and have stood the test of time. I fired up Wind Waker up the other day and the world still looked like animated magic. I played Shadow Of Colossus a few weeks back and the it still looked fantastic for completely different reasons. For example, the use of lighting in this game was genius. It really adds a almost a dream like feel to the game and helps hide some graphical flaws. I really hope they fix the camera for the HD release though.

Artistic style and highly animated. Best examples of these 2 things when it comes to 3D games, are Super Mario Galaxy 1&2, Zelda Windwaker, Little Big Planet, the new Kirby game.

If I started counting good examples of those things in 2D games I'd take me 5 hours.

Interesting topic, too many poll choices so I abstain  I say instead: Why limit ourselves? Even a drab, gritty FPS environment can be made interesting, even if they're over-represented at the moment.

I would categorize them all under Artistic Style/Atmosphere. If one of them is lacking then the whole is lacking.

Good graphics depend on how they all come together to make a whole - if every detail fits the style/atmosphere then that makes for good graphics.

It all boils down to artistic choice. Galaga and Pac Man have good graphics and will always have. Fallout 3 looks far worse than those 20 years old games because they set a goal they couldn't fulfill.

Saying that realism is better is short sighted. After all, you don't claim that Picasso and Kandinsky are bad because they weren't realistic.

In fact, sticking to realism limits you quite a lot and it may not be desirable to do so. You can't do wild takes, people rocket jumping look dumb and it makes for poor maps to name a few.

I also voted for clarity as the graphics are the mechanism that connects you to the videogame, with a bad mechanism you can't enjoy the game. Lack of clarity is like bad controls.

I think framerate should be a given.

Consistent frame rate seems more important than high frame rate to me. I genuinely don't notice the framerate in a lot of old games where its quite low, unless there's suddenly a drop or dip in it.

i used to be a graphic whore during the days of polygons , psx and sega saturn.

But today all the console now have so much power games are r u just like the movies and emulate sports and actions games like the real thing.

So graphics now are nothing to me and i find it more comfotable wehre the power of the graphics are used for art design and cleaverness. Such as the art style of Kirby epic yarn, donkey kong country wii.

I rather see the powerhouse of the console to do more art style rather than depict soemthing so real its almst like a movie.

In this day and age, it just doesn't impress me anymore for a game to look good as in detailed and realistic. So artistic style is about the only thing that really stands out to me. Great graphics are expected this generation, artistic style is not. So it's nice to see stuff like Braid, Castle Crashers, Rez HD, the upcoming third chapter of the Ico trilogy and the Sly Cooper Collection
