Sega Genesis vs. SNES!?
Re: Sega Genesis vs. SNES!?
Or you can just get a RGB monitor from an arcade game. And many computer monitors like a couple Commodores are RGB we have hooked up to our Tandy Coco's. They look great.

The shooters and platformers on the Genesis tend to be its best games, and they do sometimes manage to get more hardcore than their SNES counterparts, and that's why I love my Genesis--but I just can't think of as many of those gems as I can for the SNES. When I think of the Genesis library as a whole, the first thing I see in my mind is a bargain bin full of unlicensed sports games from EA.

The reason you see so many bargain EA sports games for the Genesis is because they sold so well. I wouldn't call them weak at all, in fact most people I know remember the Genesis as being the console for sports games in that era.

I think I've already mentioned it on this thread, but I recall that my friends who preferred the Genesis to the SNES in the early-to-mid nineties generally did so because of the superior sports games.the King wrote: The reason you see so many bargain EA sports games for the Genesis is because they sold so well. True but going scart to component is much easier especially if you want to bring it over to someone's house who may not have an RGB monitor.3GenGames wrote:Or you can just get a RGB monitor from an arcade game. For sure and even though games like NHL 94 weren't exclusive everyone associates it with the Sega Genesis.

Yeah, you split the RGB signal away from the PPU or whatever it's called in the Genesis before running it into the SVideo and AV converters.

What?3GenGames wrote:Yeah, you split the RGB signal away from the PPU or whatever it's called in the Genesis before running it into the SVideo and AV converters. You add RGB, not make it only RGB. XD
Here's a basic and (more than likely rushed) easy writeup on RGB to Component.
The Genesis natively outputs:
RGB
Composite/Composite Sync
RF
5V
Ground
Audio (mono or stereo depending on your model)
Getting a component signal out of it mainly just involves taking the 15khz RGB signal and boosting it to 30khz then passing the red and blue straight to the TV. After that you take either the green input and extract the sync signal as composite sync and send it to the TV, or directly use the composite signal on the green wire.
The TV will take the red and blue apply it to the image to create the two base colors. Next you'll get the composite sync and it'll use the luma present in the signal to generate the brightness and contrast in the image. Finally the TV's video processor will fill in the remaining color gap with it's approximation of green.
Sounds overly complicated, but it makes for a slightly brighter and more "contrasty" and vibrant image which is generally preferred for home applications. In any case it will be 99.9% completely indistinguishable from the RGB outputting directly from the console itself.

Re: Sega Genesis vs. SNES!?
Damn, I was looking at a model two while saying it doesn't output RGB, sorry. I guess it does output RGB natively. And you might as well just use A/V out on the back of the model one instead of converting the RGB to video.

Lesson learned today? Model twos and threes suck and aren't equal! -.-

It'll still look better if you ever go for a SCART/RGB to component box. Component is miles and away better than composite and doesn't suffer from nearly any of the artifacting or interlace/rainbowing that can be seen via composite.3GenGames wrote:Damn, I was looking at a model two while saying it doesn't output RGB, sorry. Yeah, just make sure it's a model without lag.
Or else you'll just be screaming at your 20 frames behind TV the whole time
