This is illegal thanks to the fact that Sonic is an intellectual property of Sega. You can't sell Sonic without Sega's permission, no matter what the format. This idea has no point. Why would I want to own an illigal, fake looking game to play on a system when I can get it legally on the internet and play it on my computer. Buying these cartridges would ruin the experience of actually playing the game.

I don't remember seeing that post. I know for a fact i didn't post on it. I'm sure i didn't. If i did, so what, peoples opinions change!

I don't want to sound like I'm trying to start an argument though.

The only way I can see any point is if somebody does a translation of a good game and then releases it US/EU where it was never released. Such as the current Policenauts translation, (which i cannot freaking wait for btw!) But even then they can't sell it for profit and the underlying legalities of such a project can face legal litigation and receive a cease and desist which just puts other people off trying such a thing. There's lots of games that i would love to play but due to them being non-english I can't play them and i don't have the time to learn a second language just for playing games.

You answered your own question. It's about having something physical versus some computer file, and playing the game on its original hardware versus playing on a computer. I'm not exactly sure how buying these ruins the experience of playing the games. Frankly, I'd think it would enhance it.

Playing old console games on a computer never feels right to me. S-NES games, NES game, Genesis games, etc, etc. were not meant to be played on a computer, and although I play a lot of mame games on PC, I'd much rather play the arcade originals, but I'm not rich enough to buy any of them or tech savvy enough to build a custom cabinet to put a pc into. It's kind of like why I have no interest in online multi-player gaming. For me, multi-player gaming would be getting a bunch of friends together in a family room with a pizza and a good co-op game like Gauntlet. Playing online doesn't give you that experience.

Granted, I am a collector and I do like owning official products, but seeing as these games never got official releases, this guy's alternative isn't so bad. It is of questionable legality, but I certainly wouldn't stop him even if it was within my power. I actually would love to have someone do something like this for a game like Starfox 2, which was never released

Custom built items can be fun, like that custom Sega Saturn cover project that was mentioned on this site at one point.

personally, i think this is really cool. regardless of the obvious legality issue in question as a whole i think this project or any fan generated project should be applauded because it captures the spirit of that era of video gaming and really caters to the fans that fervently support these consoles, and gaming motifs that have been long abandoned by their original manufacturers. who cares if the release is not "official"? I think it has more heart than some "official" games in any of our collections because they have essentially been made for the fans by the fans.

as far playing emulators- gamerforlife i have to agree with you it never does feel right playing an emulator on my computer. and i don't know about the rest of you guys but i work on a computer for 8-10 hours a day a my job, so when i relax the last thing i want to do is feel like i am at work again by playing emulators on my computer. i'd rather just kick up my feet in my living room with a beer and play some video games.
