What operating system?

Does Device manager show any drives besides the hard drive?

If XP go to Admin tools. If you play around with Computer Management. Or was it Component Services or was it in Powertoys? Anyways, find the spot to enable all the drives A-Z and turn on your CD Drive with that red X.

My wife has the PC tied up right now so I can't verify right away.

Remove/Delete all the devices showing the ? mark. Reboot and keep fingers crossed. Did you recently add a new piece of hardware such a a USB drive or memory stick?

Was there a disc in the drive or were you burning a CD last time you used it? I've had bad discs confuse a drive so bad that they wouldn't cooperate at all and the disc was 'stuck' inside since it didn't want to eject either. Try ejecting while the machine is powering up before you get to windows or straighten out a paperclip and look for the emergency eject hole. Push the paperclip straight in. There should be a little resistance as you push on a gear, then the tray should open slightly where you can carefully open it up. If there's a disc in there, remove it, reboot, then see if it starts cooperating again. If the drive still won't open and close after that and you've checked the power plug or tried another (with the machine off to switch) then the drive is likely toast.

okay here is the situtation now.

-the disc drive now open and closes, but still doesnt show icon on my computer
-i got the drivers and and went to install it, but it said theres not enough room in D drive.
-D drive has nothing in it
-im also trying to update to Vista bu when i do it says same thing not enough space on D drive. And again the D drive is emptied nothing in it.
-i delete most of stuff in D drive because i was really frustrated with it keeping saying that.
-Also i cant change the partition size because you need to reboot and restart the computer with the Xp Cd in the drive, but my cd drive doesnt read disk. it just open and closes.

You probably have a D: that's a recovery partition if you have a store bought major branded PC. But anyway, you shouldn't be doing anything at all with D:. To reinstall a CD/DVD drive you should only be removing it from device manager then restart. That's it. Windows should just figure it out. Try that. If it is still not cooperating and you've reseated the IDE or SATA cable even if it looks ok, it's probably just toast.

well like 2 weeks ago the cd rom drive was working fine , the icon showed up and i was able to boot dvd movies and stuff and what went wrong was when i mess around the system restore point then it wouldnt reconize my drive anymore and the icon doesnt show up. Even i put in the cd in the drive, it just sit in there doing nothing.

like i said i found the another driver for the CD rom drive, and i went to install it but i get this message saying i need more space on D. D drive is completely empty when i right click and explore the drive. But wehn i do property and check it its like almost full, but theres nothing in it. And i cant cahnge the partition because to do that i need the cd rom to read my XP recovery cd. :(

so stressful :(

You don't install drivers for CD/DVD drives like you do for a video card or a printer. Well, there *might* be some update that a vendor might make for the drive, but usually that's only firmware. It's possible your PC Bios got confused, but if the rest of the PC is working fine that's very unlikely. If it was working before and stopped, as I said, remove it from device manager and shut down. Replug both ends of the IDE or SATA cable for the CD drive, if it still doesn't work It's likely toast.
