SD Card corruption/not recognized

Post by Jrecee »

Anyone here know anything about restoring an SDHC that doesn't seem to contain anything?

I recorded an hour and a half of footage today, tested it several times throughout the shoot, got home and my camera is giving me the check card bs. My built in card reader doesn't even acknowledge it. I've got a program called Photorescue going through it right now but it's been going for 2 hours and has gotten nothing but read errors - this is on my mac with a usb card reader (recommended by the program).

I tried the usb card reader on my pc and instead of getting a "drive not found" error from the program, it just froze up, which makes me think the usb card reader at least got the program to acknowledge the SD.

Not sure where to go from here. I'll let photo rescue run its course (within reason, if it's still going tomorrow afternoon I'm cutting it off).

I'm supposed to deliver this footage on tuesday and so far it looks like I'm going to have to give him some bs "sorry bad sd card" excuse, which imo is unacceptable.

To top it all off I've only had this camera 3 days so this has left a sour taste in my mouth. . . even though it's the card's problem not the camera's. ARGH!

Won't help but a preventative measure.

Was the camera turned off before removing the SD card? Maybe corrupt from incomplete closeout? Same with the PC and MAC, clicking remove or eject before physically removing the card.

I've used all of these and they worked well. Listed best to worst (imo):
Flash Memory Toolkit
Sandisk RescuePro
O&O Medfia Recovery
Data Recovery for memory cards

I've found that different card readers respond differently to damaged media, so trying different ones may give different results.

Yes and Yes =)

I even tested the card and checked the footage several times throughout the shoot. But from now on I will be recording to the card until it is maxed out then reformatting to make sure every nanometer of it is functioning.

Well, try H2testw by Hise.de -- it's a fairly comprehensive Windows program that writes to every sector.
