New Toshiba hdtv 40FT1U video?

Post by benderx »

What do you recommend for video components for big tv 40 inch kinda good deal. Game consoles: Dreamcast normal red, yellow, white component cables. quality on a big tv looks bad, degrading fuzzy pixelated. not sharp enough. If I get a Dreamcast VGA Box device will it work with ps1 (ps1 probably get s- video connector)?

for ps3: hdmi is what I'll need to get now, no bigy.

I got about 3 to 4 hdmi and less component cables to hook up. My parents 720p hd tv has way more cables to hook up which was going to be my tv, but at the last minute my dad chose to get me a new tv.

I think the biggest problem with retro-gaming on new TVs is the poor de-interlacing, and playing with vertical bars.

Though it sounds like you're set on HDMI cables, good advice is to never spend more than $10 on an HDMI cable.

Be sure your HD has a S-Video input. Dreamcast VGA box is only for the Dreamcast.

From my CRT vs LCD signature link:
CRTGAMER wrote:Retro consoles utilizing best available video output are best on HD CRT:
S-video best connection N64, PS1 and Dreamcast, VGA on Dreamcast if your TV supports it. Component best connection for Gamecube, PS2 and X-box. If you have Scart RGB (Europe) Dreamcast and Xbox can utilize that mode.

PLASMA or LCD are great for current generation machines. The 360 and PS3 with best connection being HDMI. Wii best connection available is Component.

In testing all the various video input options, results the worst to the best:

Resolution limited to 480i and below
RF - Don't bother unless you play games with eyes closed.
Composite - lot of color bleeding and blur.
S-Video - clean images.

Resolution can go 480p up to 1080P
Component and RGB - Analog Image resolution higher
DVI and HDMI - Best image being all digital

VGA - Unique to Dreamcast Analog 640x480 Similar to 480p

CRT pretty much nailed it. On a side note, if you're looking for cheap cables, check out monoprice.com The prices are unbelievable cheap. I got a 6ft VGA cable for around $3.62 (but $4.95 shipping). They have HDMI cables for about the same price with the difference being a couple cents.
What a maneuver!

Ditto. Even with my DVDO edge scaler ($400 and probably the best deinterlacer for the price) it can make 480i look good at the cost of 3.5 frames of input lag. I really hate how most ps2 games are 480i (when they could just make them 480p, not hard, just lazy)

Another thing you have to watch out for is some TV's misinterpret 240p as 480i on component (Good way to test is plug in PS2 via component and test a ps1 game or Disgaea)

Just play PS1 games via PS3. It will look the best and be as lag free as can be.

Now for some pictures (240p SNES via s-video upscaled to 1080p dvdo edge on game mode.

Wow, I'm getting a 19 inch LCD to replace my really cluttered setup, and I hope it looks that good, but I'm not sure I could afford, or justify, a 400 dollar upscaler......

Hey, benderx or thelolotov, give us some more info on your TV (model, screen type, resolution, connectors) and I can recommend some upscalers. They're not all expensive like the Edge. :)

EDIT: Benderx, your tv has 4 HDMI and 1 VGA input, so you're going to need some external hardware. That's just the way it is. I'm guessing you just want a quick and dirty solution so keep in mind that these aren't necessarily the best.

Dreamcast is easy. Just get the VGA box sold at Racketboy. I have one, the quality is top notch.

Use the PS3 for your PS1 games. They won't ever look better than this. Unless you want scanlines.

For everything else, just get a s-video and composite to VGA converter. Use s-video whenever possible. It'll look decent at best. The NES only does composite. I found one for $70 doing a quick search. I cannot vouch for the quality. http://www.svideo.com/video2vga1.html

ChuChu Flamingo, if your running the softmod freemcboot on your PS2, there's a program called GS Mode Selector that'll force PS2 games into 480p. I'm not sure how the DVDO edge is with 480p signals, but It should look better than 480i deinterlacing.

Just one thing to note. PS1 on PS3 isn't lag free (not even close). It makes rhythm games almost unplayable. Parappa the Rapper is practically unplayable, me and my friend struggled for several hours to get through the game. We eventually managed to get through since we adjusted to the input lag but it was very difficult. I put the same game in my PSOne, cranked through the entire game in one go...

I'm going to have to buy some stuff at RacketBOY Store only because its cheaper then anywhere else. Direct tv charges extra for HD receiver instead of the standard. Yes my tv has vga, 1 set of RBG, 1 s-video, 1 fuckin composite area which would have been nice if they had added extra ones.

These details are from amazon, could find anything from costco.com
