I just wanted to put this out there for any one that is planning to cut the region lock tabs with a dremel tool: The plastic is thin and soft, a dremel at high speed will actually melt it. If you want to use a dremel, use it at low speed.

For the curious, here is a pic of the pass thru cart for imports mentioned in the OP.
Similar slots as a gameshark. In all honesty a pain, two sets of contacts to make work.
Mod in the OP simplifies things, only one set of contacts to line up.

I started to look more closely at the relation of a game cart to N64 console clearances. Just maybe the region notches in the cart allows for a slightly tighter connection. Less side to side movement. In the interim I swapped out the back of my Import Sin and Punishment with a spare U.S. game cart.
