CRT TV problem... Weird horizontal lines

Post by jeffesaurusrex »

I'm having an ongoing problem with my CRT, and I thought maybe someone would know a solution. On most games (unless they have a black border at top and bottom) I am getting some horizontal lines coming down about 1/4 the way from the top of the screen. It looks like the top of the image is too far up, and the picture is displaying what should be cut off, except upside down and in pixel-tall lines. If a game has a screen position adjustment I can adjust the picture down to where the lines no longer appear in most cases, but in some games (Ikaruga is one) the screen position adjustment only goes like ten pixels up or down so I can't get all the lines out. The attatched picture shows the lines but they come down much further in many games. No matter how far down they come they're always the same size and have the same spacing in between. Sometimes the last line only comes halfway across the screen then there's sort of a bright dot where it stops.

It also seems like the picture sits too high anyways because in some games there is a tiny black bar at the bottom of the screen.

This started months ago and has gotten progressively worse until this point, and I'm now ready to either try and fix it or go on a craigslist hunt for it's replacement.

Any tips? I have mild soldering experience but I've never worked on a TV before. It's very likely that I could fix it if I knew what I was looking for.

Thanks for any advice guys.

P.S., There is no screen position adjustment within the menus of the TV.

I had a TV that started collapsing the picture into a horizontal stripe in the middle of the screen. If I gave it a whack, it would be ok again. But it got progressively worse. I'm not sure the name of the bit, but something's got a loose connection or is failing in your TV. You can probably get it fixed, but unless it's a super awesome TV it might not be worth the expense. :(

My GF had a VGA monitor that did the exact same thing. We tossed it. If you're attached to this tube, it's likely that there are pots inside that will let you adjust the hpos and vpos. However, mucking about inside a CRT is dangerous so I don't recommend it. Spend $50 on another one from CL and save yourself the risk of high voltage across the chest.

May be in the tube adjustment itself, but you might be able to adjust that vertical up a little. Just get the the upper few scanlines out of the view area. Pop the back cover off, you'll find vertical-horizontal adjustments inside.

WARNING! EVEN WHEN UNPLUGGED,
HIGH VOLTAGE AROUND THE BACK OF THE CRT

Just keep clear of the tube itself and you will be okay. A plastic screwdriver best for adjusting those back potentiometers. Remember the starting point and go in small increments.
