sega cdx skipping

Post by smurdd »

I've had this cdx for a long time, It used to work perfectly. Then one day it just started messing up, and not loading any game. I would get close a couple time, but the only game that worked was sonic cd. eventually it wanted to read every game as an audio disc. I took it apart (I did that to everything as a kid) put it back together, and just gave up when nothing changed.

well today for some reason I felt like seeing if it worked. popped sonic cd in and it actually thought it was a game. I was so happy. but then I saw that all the audio was skipping. and it does this on every game too. like it will go for a few seconds then stop and go again. it does that with some fmv's too. lunar freezes and repeats the same 5 seconds of a song. a lot of games don't get past the sega log with sonic waving his hand. and some stop after. does anyone know whats wrong with it?

Have you tried cleaning the lens?

I tried cleaning it with a cue tip a little bit ago, and there was no change.

Next you should try lightly dampening a Q-Tip with isoprophyl (rubbing) alcohol and very lightly swabbing the eye with it. If you got too much on the eye, you can use a dry Q-Tip and lightly swab it dry.

I tried that earlier, I just did it again now and for a while it kept saying there was no disc. then the system kept restarting itself when trying to read the disc. it finally loaded the game its still messing up.

could I just need a new laser?

What is the condition of the disc? Perhaps the system is fine but the disc has problems. Does the problems occur with just one game, or many games?

the problem happens with all my games. my sonic cd does have some scratches. I have soul star with 2 tiny scratches, but it has never gotten passed the screen with sonic.

If the system was restarting itself then the issue probably isn't the laser. More likely there is a bad capacitor that's failing or an intermittent short.

its never restarted itself like that before. to my knowledge anyways.

is there anyway to fix the system then?

I've also tried audio cds on it and they skip the same way.

Probably going to need to check over the boards for shorts or bulging or leaking caps. I don't know of anything specific myself. I started to open my CDX when I got it to give it a good clean, but it's so packed in there I decided to leave it alone since it was working fine.
