I always assumed he had those colors because they're associated with jamaican culture.flamepanther wrote:I liked the music, but I don't think rock is really the genre best suited to Sonic games. The best Sonic tunes from the Genesis/Megadrive era were the ones that had a pop, dance, or new jack swing vibe to them--especially the ones influenced by Michael Jackson. Sonic Riders Zero Gravity had a soundtrack that I think is much better suited to Sonic than what we've had in a lot of the recent "main" games.ZeroAX wrote:If only the sound department would stick to rock/punk, and not do rap music (how the fuck does Knuckles = rap???????????)
Knuckles has always kinda been the "black guy" of the Sonic games. You can see an example of it in his "Tommie Smith" victory pose when he crosses a level's finish line in Sonic Advance 2. See also the dreadlocks and the green+yellow+red shoes--the colors of Ethiopia, used around the world by supporters of black culture and civil rights. I suspect that has something to do with the use of rap for all of his music in Sonic Adventure 2. Just an observation.

The colors have an extra significance in Jamaica because Rastafarians regard Ethiopa as Zion (the promised land). Their use is far from exclusive to Jamaica though.Jrecee wrote:I always assumed he had those colors because they're associated with jamaican culture.

All of this conversation is making me want to give up all of Big's fishing levels (all I have left) and move right on to SA2... I want to hear the Rap music and debate about a Rastafarian Knuckles!

I get that Sonic Adventure 2 improved on the formula of SA 1, but the music was god awful, particularly the Knuckles stages.. Rap and video games just don't mix, and I had to mute to TV to play his scenario out..

Knuckles' soundtrack really didn't bother me except the theme for Pumpkin Hill (that whole level sucked). I sorta enjoyed the Aquatic Mine track, and I didn't think Wild Canyon was all that bad either.

Yeah it just was weird listening to Rap in a Sonic game.. It seemed like the guy rapping on his soundtrack wanted to get a record deal or something and it sounded like Gangsta rap, only he's rapping about Chaos Emeralds, LOL!!! And I do agree the Pumpkin Hill theme was sooooo bad... HAHAHAHAHA!!!flamepanther wrote:Knuckles' soundtrack really didn't bother me except the theme for Pumpkin Hill (that whole level sucked). Nah, the vocals weren't rough enough to be gangsta rap, IMO. I think the slow but strong beats they used suited the Knuckles' attitude and the pace of the "item hunt" stages. In one of Sonic's levels it might have been weird. I don't know though, the second part of Red Canyon had a definite hip hop sound to it and that worked just fine--it just didn't have any lyrics.EvilRyu2099 wrote:Yeah it just was weird listening to Rap in a Sonic game.. I think that's what was the weirdest to me about the Sonic Adventure 2 soundtrack. Lyrics during the cut scenes seems natural enough, but during the BGM for the levels it feels out of place, no matter what style it's in.

The lyrics certainly weren't gangsta rappish, but the tone seemed to think so... It sounded like hardcore NYC or West Coast rap and it seemed out of place..flamepanther wrote:Nah, the vocals weren't rough enough to be gangsta rap, IMO. When I think of "gangsta" nowadays, I immediately think of the growled vocal style of performers like DMX. My mistake, and I'll concede the point.EvilRyu2099 wrote:I think that's what was the weirdest to me about the Sonic Adventure 2 soundtrack. I still don't think it was any more out of place than the punk-pop tunes they gave Sonic.
