I read an article that namco made a lot of sales on Despicable Me The Game
which amazed me
I thought the world was over buying games based on tv or movie franchise.
Everyone by now knows those things are a quick buck schemes and the games suck
I sure remember a time when I would go out and buy a game based on something I like, and the game itself doesn't matter as long as I can play in the world of whatever I liked. But that was pre-internet when people were ignorant.
While I still do want to play Independence Day on psx,
do you still buy games based on the franchise the are built upon?
If so , is there any game that is worth while and unknown(hidden gem?) of the current generation?
Do you paly TV/Movie franchise games?

as far as games based on franchises, the naruto games pretty much always impress, especially shippuden ultimate ninja 3 (or whatever the hell it's called) on the wii. amazing game to bust out at parties!
there are several others that have pleasantly surprised me over the past few years, like the lego games (lego star wars, namely), astro boy omega factor (was seriously blown away by this game), and a few others. that one star wars game on the DS (name escapes me here) was really cool - the 2D beat 'em up. scott pilgrim was also a load of fun.
i'd honestly say the good to bad ratio of licensed games is pretty much the same as it's been since the beginning, they've just got a lot more spotlight now due to gaming being as mainstream as it is.

Parents buy their kids those licensed games. There's also a large section of videogame consumers which is impressed by brand power, e.g. James Bond.
I think the last decent movie game I got was The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape From Butcher Bay for the PC, which was remade for current consoles. I read that Toy Story 3 isn't too shabby if you like Pixar's stuff. Arguably this has been the worst generation for movie licensed games. I would sort the quality thusly: 16-bit->32-bit->6th gen->7th gen. Progressively worse with each generation of consoles.

I like to play Duck Tales & Chip N Dale Rescue Rangers if that counts. I was also impressed with The Thing. As a previous poster mentioned Astro Boy for the GBA was awesome.

If they're any good, I'll play them. 90% of them might be utter garbage, but we do get the occasional Arkham Asylum.

I'm more wary of buying TV/Movie franchise games, but every once and awhile there is a Peter Jackson's King Kong, Chronicles of Riddick, or Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers that is just really good, so I don't write them off entirely.

Not usually. One BIG exception is Mobile Suit Gundam, especially games based on the 1979 series. I bought a jp PS2 JUST to import / play.
I also was rather fond of the Power Ranger games for the SNES.

Maybe now Nintendo will acknowledge Metroid has a fanbase?

Re: Do you paly TV/Movie franchise games?
there's tons of shit licensed games. But plenty of hidden gems. Scooby-Doo Classic Creep Capers (GBC) pops into my head, but I've talked up that game a lot already. There's others though.
