Nominate Neo-Geo Games That Pushed The Limits

Post by racketboy »

I want to expand the list of Neo-Geo games that pushed the technical limits of the hardware the most. I'll list the ones I've got so far below, but please pitch in with other nominations.

It would also be especially helpful to let me know a good reason why a particular game should be included (the longer the explaination, the better)

So here's what I have so far:
Fatal Fury: Mark of the Wolves
The Last Blade 2
Samurai Shodown V
King of Fighters 2003
Sengoku 3
SNK vs Capcom Chaos
(Which Metal Slug is the most technically-impressive?)

Money Idol Exchanger and Magical Drop 2 and 3. Okay just a bunch of coins and marbles, but well executed sounds and graphics. Gameplay shines too.

The animated character in the background adds to the puzzle. Also the animation when coins and marbles line up. Pre-Bejeweled satisfying bell clanking sounds.

The Megs on the box has been proven to be wrong on many titles.

Nam 1975

Right out of the gate this game came blazing with guns in each arm. When the NeoGeo launched, this game was bundled with the console and two controllers for the huge price of $650. With a price tag like that, SNK had to prove themselves. The big graphic cut scenes with spoken dialogue, the explosive sounds, the dramatic music, tons of enemies on screen, and the relentless action of Nam 1975 made it clear that the NeoGeo was the cutting edge of technology at the time. Over the years, though I have come to love games like Metal Slug, Samurai Showdown, and Fatal Fury, I have always seen Nam 1975 as the definitive NeoGeo game. I loved it when the system launched and it is still my favorite NeoGeo game.

Plus I've heard that developers purposefully didn't use any compression to get a higher meg count as a marketing tool.

Metal Slug X and Metal Slug 3
MS3 pushed it hard.... the zombie blood puke animation is my favorite.

Matrimelee had some very pretty moments, but it was no MOTW.
Art of Fighting 3 - huge ass sprites.

Blazing Star - Pulstar was just as pretty, but blazing had 2 player. Had to throw schmup on there.

Some personal bias forces me to mention:
Waku Waku 7, Last Resort, Viewpoint(music and graphics)
